This is a wonderful book of African life and death...Poetry written by one of us an African Hunter..
I also had the pleasure of riding home from Africa with Rege and he is from Pennsylvania...
Here is a sample of Rege's writing...

Lion

Look about when the King is out
And starts to flick his tail
'Cause after as few, he'll becoming for you
And your nerve better not fail

For like it or not, you'll get but one shot
And it better be in the right place
For as long as he lives, no quarter he gives
And death smiles from his face

So when you've shot him through
And he charges you...
Coming on courage and hate
Calm down, chamber a round
And shoot; shit, you're to late!

I read this book every year...

Mike,

That is pretty graphic, and pretty accurate, too.

I like this version, also:

Lion

The curl of his lips and the flash of his fangs
And his crouch and the flick of his tail,
All teeth and sinew, now he's coming for you,
So your nerve had better not fail.

Like it or not, you'll get only one shot;
It had better be in the right place.
No quarter he'll give, for as long as he lives;
Death snarls and smiles from his face.

You must shoot him through,
While he charges at you,
Hard and fast, fueled by courage and hate.
You must hold your ground, calmly chamber a round,
And shoot straight, before it's too late!

MR,

Do you know when the poem you posted was published and who the author was? The two are very similar.
