This is my second and last effort to read books by Foran. I read this second book due to the response to a review I wrote on the previous book - Kill or Be Killed -where my review was contested by another respected AR member. Ok, I tried again but this book is worse than the first. His writing is of the adventurer genre but is poorly executed and lacks credibility. His hunting companions and he were - mauled by a grizzly bear (while hunting around Pike's Peak in Colorado), tossed by an elephant twice, his gun bearer tossed and later killed by an elephant, he kills a cape buffalo with a knife at night, and on and on. He stops charge after charge, claims to have killed 400 elephants in a six year hunting career while a British soldier, knew many of the more documented hunter/poachers in the Belgian Lado Enclave area (and wrote a book about it). This book, he repeats at least 70 pages (of 190 pages total) of stories contained in "Kill or Be Killed". The rest are stories and his opinions on the various dangerous game animals. He considers the black rhino - "brainless and not challenging". His style is such that he tries to accentuate the danger and his heroic efforts. I really have nothing good to say about this guy's writing style. Yes, he has great credentials, as noted in comments on my previous review, but that does not change my mind about his efforts. I suspect that he "borrowed" many of the events he writes about from other hunters. I doubt his credibility and definitely doubt his style. I will not be reading "Elephant Hunters of Lado" if it is anything like these last two. I rate this a 2 out of 10 on the dogcat scale. I recommend not bothering to find a copy of this book. | ||
