Outstanding! Excellent! A new addition to my top 10 Africa books list. A "must read" for fans of African books.
This book follows "The Land of Footprints" and completes his "journey" and descriptions of his trip to hunt and see Africa. White is an excellent story teller but is a better writer. His words capture the essence of Africa and what it smells and feels like. He allows the reader to feel what he feels and experience what he does. His descriptions of everyday events and hunts and dealing with the Masai people are engaging as I like to think that I felt and experience similar things on my trips to Africa.

You cannot go wrong with this book. It is long out of print but is out there in paperback. I am going to search for a hardback to add to my "Best Of" collection.

I rate this a strong 10 out of 10 on the dogcat scale.

In Part 1: To the island of war/ The open door, he describes the contrast of the old grizzled African veterans returning from Africa and the young men getting ready to depart to Africa to seek their fortunes in the lobby of the Grand Hotel du Louvre et de la Paix at Marseilles. It is some of the most elegant prose you will ever have the pleasure of reading. ESW's writing style is wonderful.

I've not read his work, but there is a brief biography on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, the sample of his writing the bio provides is of the dated "dark and stormy night" genre.

I could not open the link Artemis provided. Looks like I'll have to buy a copy.
