One of Us |
Just finished reading this book by a noted doctor and hunter. In summary, this book is two parts. Part 1 is a discussion of how men 60 years old and older can stay in shape to do sheep hunts and African hunts without serious health issues. Dr. Pritchard has done a bunch of tough hunts after turning 70. He describes his workout and health regime and offers a lot of encouragement to continue the tough hunts after a lot of guys retire to a deer stand. The advice is good and predictable - eat well, exercise, lose weight. He is telling his story from the perspective of one has done it. It is good info, but nothing you have not heard before. Part 2 is a collection of hunt reports about his various hunts in Africa, sheep hunts in North America and one sheep hunt in Mongolia. His story telling is not world class but told from the perspective of a hunter trying to sound like an adventure writer. He is very candid about his hunts, who he hunted with and his number of misses on animals. I liked the perspective of how he did his hunts and the detail in what he say, did and shot. His story telling is weak in terms of entertainment value but the book is worth reading from an "information" standpoint. Most of his hunts have been in the last 20 years with several in the last ten years. Overall, he is an impressive guy with a great message to all of us - stay in shape and go hunting! This book is available from Safari Press for $40. I will sell you my once read copy shipped for $25 if you want it.
