I've had an early edition of Sir Samuel White Baker's "Wild Beasts And Their Ways" for several years but never got around to reading it until this week. It's well worth your time if you can find a copy. I intend to round up more of this prolific, interesting 19th century author's works. Bill Quimby

Bill Baker was a fine writer and had the experience to make his works very interesting. Holland and Holland made a wise move by listening to his advice and more or less bringing Baker into their fold. Baker was definitely a big bore man! His experiences in Ceylon are interesting since there is little written furing his era about hunting Asian game. His encounters with the gaur are great reads. The last author who had credible experience with gaur and other asian game was John Brandt. Don't believe you can hunt gaur anywhere in the world these days. And Juan, he was more than a pig sticker. If I recall correctly, Baker took a stab at some DG with a spear on horseback. Since Baker's works are no longer protected by US coppyright laws, you can pick up some relatively inexpensive copies in both hard and paperback. I like to watch for his early editions and get them on the cheap. Something about a 100+ year old book! SCI Life Member DSC Life Member

"Baker was a fine writer and had the experience to make his works very interesting." I agree! I was lucky to find an early edition of his "Wild Beasts and Their Ways" at a thrift-store price. It will not be the last of his works that I intend to find. Bill Quimby
