I just finished this fairly new book by Jeff Guinn. It is about Pershing + Pancho Villa + the American expeditionary force prior to WW1. Interesting historical reading.

I'd love to read it. I went to a Catholic school that started in Matamoros and later moved across the river to Brownsville. One of the old brothers was in the cafeteria while it was in Matamoros when Villa rode into the cafeteria on a horse and tried to recruit them to join the revolution. I also worked for a gunsmith who as a very young man, climbed the bell tower of the cathedral in Brownsville and watched Villa's assault on Matamoros across the river. Those were interesting times.

Folks used to sit on the fence rails at Union Stocks Yards in El Paso and watch Villa and crew fighting the Federalist in Juarez.. My grandfathers brother Bowie Clne was foreman at the yards and we sold cattle there, at one meeting dad and Bowie were talking cows and I was wandering around and saw a walk in safe with a bunch of wood gun boxes, one open and had a new mod. 86 45-90, dad said get outa there, Bowie said we bought those when Pancho Villa was thinking about raiding us, that ones mine, I bet you could shoot one of those big deer on your ranch, I said boy could I and he said Ill give it to you and you bring me a hind quarter! deal was closed..I sold that gun some years later for $150, big money those days but think of what it would have brought today..The wood box marked Winchester would bring $500 bet. Last time I saw the box it was full of salt in the South 40. by the windmill!!
