There were so many bloody conflicts with our First Nations Americans in the 19th century that it is hard to keep them all straight.
But if you want a first-rate education on the deadliest one, and likely the least known, find a copy of Gregory Michno's "The Deadliest Indian War in the West, the Snake Conflict, 1864-1868."
This war played out in a vast theater, including most of Oregon east of the Cascades, northeastern California (think Modoc county), northern Nevada and the mining districts of south and central Idaho. The various tribes of the Snakes were incredibly mobile and masters of some of the most difficult terrain in North America, and they struck fast, and without mercy.
Believe me, you will thank me if you read this book.

Bill, I got the book on Kindle. Question for you, does it pick up after a slow start? I am admittedly not far into the book maybe 20-30 pages but it been a slow slog.

True, much was not recorded or at least written afterward because we as whites had won. I say this all very toungue in cheek as we all know how this works.I recall being a little kid in the early 50's when roadside picnic tables (meals) + various attratchens were the vouge. They had a penned buffalo. At that time there were less than 100 left. That was the selling point, see it while you can. Thank God others with more conservationist foresight thought that reintroducing them had merit.I'll look for that book Bill. Best,R.

Mike, I didn't have problems with the pacing because I live in Oregon, not far from where a lot of the action takes place. It helps to know or have seen the country, which is spectacular.

I am half way through "The deadlies War in the west". Very good read. Our company sells quite a few machines in the places that the forts were built and I have driven there a bit. That's helped me get throught the first part of the book, which is filled with historical info but few gory details. After the battle of Paradise Valley in 1864, watch out! You will be fired on, ducking arrows and covered in blood. It's a good read. A lot of the stuff you see in movies from Dances with Wolves, The Night of the Stalking moon and Luzana's Raid are portrayed as factual in this book. Army incompetence. brutal, pissed of indians and 'indian fightin' settlers" are all there, page after page. And, I am only half way through. Brian

Brian, they certainly showed no mercy on that party of unarmed Chinese immigrants walking to the mines.

I am reading up to where Crook and McKay's scouts are staying out on patrols all winter, looking for the "Lo family". (indians). They were tough buggers!
I never thought that was such a hard winter country.
