Baikal, Stoeger, Khan

What is the better brand? I'd love to get an over under or a side by side. Nothing fancy, this'll be a gun that gets hunted with. I also would like to spend $400 or less, which would be easy with the Stoeger and some of the Baikal and Khan guns I've seen on Auction Arms.

I do want to be able to change choke tubes though.

Quality wize, which of the three should I go for? Right now I have a Mossberg Maverick. Functional but not pretty, and pretty damn rugged. That's what I like.

Local store has the Stoeger condor o/u for $329, but the action felt a bit stiff. Shouldered nice though.

I have a mind like a steel trap... rusty and illegial in 37 states.

any new ones of these 3 brands I have seen in the last couple years are very, very tight and stiff actions. also, tend to be heavy. They definitely are not pretty either.

You might consider a Dehaan. www.dhshotguns.com

they are more in the $650 to $800 ranges but much nicer, well balanced and strong warranty by Mark Dehaan.

Clement,
I bought a 20 gauge Khan for my son as a starter shotgun. It has performed very well. It comes with 5 choke tubes and weighs 6 lbs 7 ounces. The stock is made from Turkish walnut but then so are all the turkish guns. His has some fairly decent wood with some nice figure. They don't all come like that. I looked at the Baikal, and the Huglu (Dehaan) before I bought and thought this one was the better made relative to finish and wood to metal fit. We have shot around 500 rounds through it and it is working fine. The price on these was $369 when I got it.

I have 3 Biakal sxs shotguns and sear by them. They are my working guns that I put through hell and back.I have a 20 ga that i love and have shot around 1500 times no problems. Its the best sxs for the money you can buy.I also have the 12 ga but shoot the 20 50 times for every time i shoot the 12 ga.The 20 ga is deadly on grouse and light weight .I grew up with a Remington 1100 and an FIE sxs 20 ga.I hardly ever use a auto shotgun unless its for geese.I think a good sxs is a way better choice for a youngster than a single shot. They can use a sxs all their live where they will out grow the single shot.

I picked up 12 ga Baikal IZH27 Sporting after I returned from my little "desert vacation via the USAF" early last fall. Its definitely a couple of cuts above the standard IZH27 in fit and finish. While it's still not a Browning or Beretta clays gun it is built like a proverbial T72 main battle tank and cost 1/3 the amount of an entry level Beretta/Browning. Chokes are readily available for Baikal shotguns through Colonial and Tru-Lok.
