i can't tell you what the differences are but i have had a 28 gauge model 4, which is the boxlock action, for over thirty years now. it is a nice shotgun and have never had any trouble with it.

AYAs are made in various grades, Sears even used to sell a low grade AYA made sxs years ago.

If your looking a AYA's look at Ugartechea also.

You would need to tell us what model numbers you are looking at, before we can help you out.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

The No 4's are all boxlocks, made on a design modelled after a Westley Richards boxlock, but slightly simplified.

The No 1 (highest grade), No 2, No 53 and No 56 are all H&H-pattern sidelocks. Some even have hand-detachable locks with the characteristic H&H-style lever on the lock.

The 53 and 56 are made for live-pigeon shooting with a raised rib, sideclips and heavier actions.

The XXV is a Churchill-style gun with 25-inch barrels and Churchill rib. You can get it in either boxlock or sidelock version.

Hope this helps!

That helps.

I bird hunt alot here in Iowa and have started to look for a nicer shotgun. I don't know what I'm looking for yet, just trying to get some information.

If anyone has any recommendations it would be helpful.

I'm thinking a 16 gauge side by side for $3000ish??????

Ok,now we have established that you are a man of taste. You could look at guntrader.co.uk for a nice English 16 bore.

Sir,

When I was in the "thinking" stage where you seem to be, I picked up a copy of Terry Weiland's book "Spanish Best". A lot of wonderful history and very informative (although a bit dated now perhaps). Stunning photography and a chance to compare and contrast engraving styles, etc.

That one book cost me a pile of money...and I couldn't be happier!

Save yourself some cash and look at the Ugartechea. I started out looking at the aYA's 4/53, ended up buying a used 28 ga. Ugartechea for $900. It is a great shooting and handling gun and weighs just a touch over 5 pounds with 27 in. barrels. The last couple of years I have shot a limit every day even on SD pheasants in December with the 28 ga.
