OK: I know someone knows the answer to this question...I thought I used to know, now can't recall...In some vintage side by side doubles, the chokes on the barrels are in reverse order from the conventional...what I mean is normally a side by side double shotgun has the right barrel a more open choke, say an Impcyc., and the left barrel a tighter choke...say a modified. HOWEVER, I once had a 1926 NID Ithaca where right barrel was full choke, and left barrel ImpCylinder. (all guns have double triggers, first or forward trigger shoots the right barrel, second trigger the left). Now I have another Vintage gun with the right barrel full choke & the left, modified. The question is what is the reason for this? Was the preference using the back trigger & left barrel first in the more open choke? Anyone know the reason for this reverse from normal or todays chokes in modern side by side doubles? Thanks, Tom | ||

Well, some of the English side by sides made for shooting driven pheasants had the chokes reversed because as game was coming at the shooter, the first shot would be farther away then the second one. I’ve seen pairs of Spanish side by sides, made for shooting driven red-partridge, that had on gun NºI right barrel-Imp. Mod; left-Imp. Cylinder, gun NºII right barrel - Imp. Cylind.; left barrel - Imp. Mod. This made sense because as the flight of birds approached, the shooter had two shots far and near, as they passed by him he would take the second gun and fire two more shots at he going away birds, near and far. Thanks for info...I'd never shot at driven birds, so didn't think about that scenerio...makes sense. I was just surprised as both of my guns are American made, where driven birds are usually not done here..your answer makes sense all right, but there may be another answer too, for American Guns of yesteryear.
