I am wanting to have a sub-gauge tube set fitted to my K-80. I will purchase either Briley or Kolar. Is there a preference ? A difference ? I want the top of the line. Please advise.
Thanks,
Jim

Either are great. Since you are in Arlington, I'd recommend Briley just because they are close. And Briley has wonderful service if you ever need anything.

I was just in the briley showroom today. Very nice stuff there. The gentlemen gave me some pretty good info on the tube sets. I'm going to have them fit 28 guage tubes to my 12 guage. I will probably go with the standard weight instead of the ultralites. The difference is only 4-6 ounces.

I have had excellent service from Briley with my tubed set. Doesn't Briley make tubes for Kolar when they are too busy?

As much as I like Briley, Kolar's service after the sale has been better.
Example- extractor failure- charged for repairs @ Briley--(repeatedly) free at Kolar, now this has been a couple of years and who knows what the current economic climate has done to that service.

But, Kolar never charged me, Briley always did.

Jim, Briley sets come with two pair of chokes per gauge. Kolar comes with just one pair. they are both very good products.

I have a K-80 with the Briley Ultimate Ultralites in a carrier barrel. In my opinion this is the only way to go, because the weight is the same on all four gauges. Briley also gets the nod for excellent customer service.

I have had four sets of Briley tubes fitted to various skeet and sporting clays guns. I absolutely love the Ultimate Ultralights with the straight rifling and chokes. I think the rifling really does make a difference in the .410 and allows me to use bigger shot (8 or 8.5 instead of 9) for better breaks. I shoot the 28s the most and have more than 15000 rounds through my current 28 tubes with zero issues of any kind. I have not owned the Kolar tubes, but have shot many friends guns that are so equiped and they also are a quality product. Can't really go wrong with either I suppose.

I've had both and they both work fine --- the big difference is the Briley's have schokes that screw INTO the end of the barrels while the Kolar's have chokes that screw ONTO the end of the barrels. My preference is Kolar.

I generally like Briley products but I've had several problems that seemed to take a long time to either fix or resolve -- some of the folks I talked to had no clear concept of customer service.

Kolar isn't without fault but every time I needed something it was handled quickly and without charge. For example! I was having a little trouble with the .410 and wasn't happy with my scores so I called Kolar (and talked to Rags) and send send the chokes I had back and he'd send me 2 more --- 2 days later I had the chokes and still hadn't shipped mine. I didn't like those either and when I called Rags he said he's send some more --- 2 days later I received 6 sets of chokes in various constrictions with a note saying "try these and keep the ones you want and send the rest back".

It took some time and a lot of shooting but I found the pair I liked -- that's customer service.

Briley also has a free replacement of the choke tubes for their tube sets. I had a swollen ring in each of an earlier set of 20 gauge tubes and Kolar said it was due to overloads. I told them I had used the same safe loads for the whole time I had the tubes. They fixed the tubes but charged me for the repairs. Seems at times that they have had some issues with that kind of thing at Kolar but I have not heard of it for some time. Briley will fix them, period.

I have had issues with the time frame that Briley promises at times. Kolar seems to get the work out faster when they are fitting a set of tubes.

Chick --- I think it has a lot to do with whom you deal. I always talked directly to Rags at Kolar do never had a problem but with Briley it was whoever answered the phone.

Bill, I believe I was dealing with Rags and I have heard of others with the same or similar problem where it was covered. I think highly even now of their tubes but they did not seem to be consistent with their warranty. I have not heard of any problems like that lately and suspect they cleared up any issues with warranty interpretation among their staff. I have not seen that with Briley but in honesty, it is just by what I have heard as I have never had a problem with swelling or splitting. I have heard of 20 gauge tubes splitting and they replaced the chambers. I did have the tubes loosen up in my Perazzi and they tighten them up by installing some buttons and said if that did not work they would install new chambers but their work did the trick and no charge.

I do like the way that Kolar makes their choke tubes, rather than screw them in the muzzle the srew ON a thicker section of the tube. They are more expensive but not more than the Brileys extended chokes.

I've always used Briley's. No experience with the Kolar. I've never had a problem with briley's tubes and they have good service IMO.
