I need a rifled shotgun to hunt deer in some areas where rifles are not allowed. Which of the models currently available gives the best value for the money. I'm currently considering the Savage 210 and the H&R slug gun. Anyone have any experience with either of these?

Seems to me that a used 870 Remington could be had for cheap enough, even just a field gun with a VR barrel. Then buy a rifled barrel on Ebay or off one of the hunting forums if you adevertise for it. Could probably do the whole thing for under $300.

Or look on Gunbroker,

Here's a rifled 870 Express for $289.00,

or the cantilevered scope mount version for $359.00,

I just bought a youth model mossberg 500 sluggster from gander mtn for $230.00 today.
went to the range and had 3 shot groups clover leafing at 50yds. It has a rifled barrel with unbelievable accuracy!! It's the 20 gauge and I luv mine!! I also like the Benelli nova for $300 to $400 range! Very accurate as well.

I would keep right on considering that Savage 210 and then go buy one. You will not find a slug gun nearly as accurate for any price less than four times that of the Savage. I will concede that if you want a shotgun that will do more than shoot slugs, it is not the ideal choice but it is great for sabot slugs. I have had the best luck with Winchester Partition Gold. Unfortunately I don't think they offer it with the Accutrigger (mine is not but it is older). It is a great gun if you are used to hunting with a bolt action rifle.

Can't speak for the savage, but the NEF / H&R has both a 12 and 20 rifled slug gun (can add a 50 cal inline barrel for $75.00 to the 20). I have the 20 Ultra Slug Hunter, comes tapped for scope. Cost was $189.00 plus tax at Gander Mountain. Mine groups the Rem copper solids inside 2" at 100 yrds (with scope) and the Rem Ulta's are about the same. However, if your shots are under 70 yrds, you can get the Rem 870 express with both 26" and 22" smooth slug barrel for $339.00 Mine groups standard Rem smooth bore slugs at 2" at 50 yrds. All depends on what you want and the distance you can shoot and how much you want to spend for shells. Smooth bore about $3.00, Rem Ultra's 10.99 per box of 5

Marlin 512. Clunky, but will last for ever, Accurate, and can mount a scope over the receiver-no cantilever set up needed.

Used, they go for $225-250ish.

3 inch groups or less at 100 yards.

NEF 12 ga rifled sug gun is good too. I've seen used ones for ~ $125. Open sights. Anything in woods ranges (75 yards) is yours. Lightweight, so recoil with 1 - 1 1/4 oz slugs would be more than a tinkle.

NEF 20 ga Ultra outshoots my Rem 1100 and my 870 cantalevered slug barrels and one 20 ga slug is all you need anyway. Mine has the green and brown laminated stock and I left it leaning against the rear bumper of my F250 while I went to take a leak and my son ran over the butt with the truck...no damage to the stock and I have a good story to tell my son's friends at just the right time.

Hard to beat NEF for value even if they are butt ugly!!...they are cheap and shoot good.

You should be able to find good used mossbergs for under or around $100. A good used 870 will be more, but with either, you can get a rfled barrel and have a very versitile gun.

Also, take a look around at bolt action shotguns. They tend to be very inexpensive, and will work great for a deer gun!

Going inexpensive..?

Two choices...H&R, or Savage 210.

Savage is definitely a better gun. (of course it does costs more). The H&R is a fine choice, only drawback is the fact that it requires a bull barrel and a weighted stock in order to match the handling and accuracy of the Savage. Can't really go wrong with either.

Savage 210..
