Gentlemen, I just got a 28 gauge barrel that fits on my Blaser R-93 bolt action rifle. It is a single shot so I will not be doing a lot of "wing" shooting with it. It will be used for smallgame for the pot, rabbits, squirrel, grouse, etc. I bought some 2 3/4" high base #6 that I think will be my best all round load for this use. Do ya'll agree? Does anybody load slugs in the 28gauge. I thought Brenneke or Fiocchi might but have been unable to discover any. And... Does anybody make 28gauge all brass cases? I figure if I could get some of them I could load up my own bulleted rounds, sort of in the tradition of Westley Richards Explora Shells. Maybe use the muzzle loader sabot type projectiles, that way nothing but plastic would touch the bbl, the sabot providing the gas seal, yet easy passage down the bore. If a 1 oz load [@437grains] does 1200fps, a 300gr sabot should safely attain @ 1500fps in the Blaser Rifle action. Good enough for deer and pigs out to 75 or 100 yards.

Do not know about the slugs, but the #6 shot is good choice, I prefer the 3/4 ounce loads in the 28 for wing shooting, the 1 ounce is to much for the 28 and does not pattern as well in my experience.

I regularly see antique all brass 28ga shells for sale on eBay. Go to Sports > Sporting Goods > Hunting and do a search for "28ga" or "28 ga". I found two listings this morning. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3611704914&category=383 and http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3611693765&category=7309

quote:N E 450 #2, WE have two 28's here, I think a lot of them. Excellent for Grouse, Pheasant over a good GSP ,etc. One of them is a Ruger Red Label, and what a joy it is to shoot. I shoot copper plated 6's for pheasant and Grouse, 3/4oz.loads. I looked for 28 ga. slugs last fall and was told they are not made by anyone. Everyone has .410 slugs but no 28's, go figure Dennis

You can find 28ga. slugs at www.ballisticproducts.com. I believe they sell improved foster slugs in 28 and a few others.
