I have a new trap gun, Browning XT Combo, and would like to have it "fitted" to me. Where can I find a gun fitter? I live in SE Wisconsin. I do not know if a gun fitter works with the stock on the gun or makes you a whole new stock. I think they make you a whole new stock. But I do not know any gun fitters or where to find one. Any advice here would be appreciated.

Johhny,
A stock fitter works with the complete gun, and the person who will be using it. He takes in to account the persons build, and the relationship of the various body parts used to fire the gun with measurements of the shotgun. The idea is to make the shotgun fit the person instead of the person to fit the shotgun. Anyone who says they can do it without both you and the shotgun coming in to be measured is to be avoided. I have done a few fittings but I am in Michigan so of no help to you.

JohnnyB, Mike is correct. Be aware that a gun fitter does not have to be the person who modifies the gunstock. A gun fitter will need you and the gun, and will then provide you with all the measurements to give to the stock maker/modifier who will then modify the stock to those measurements. The gun fitter may also have a "try gun" to help validate the measurements. Have you shot the gun yet? Yo may want to do that first. bear in mind that there are a lot of adjustments that can be made without modifying the gun itself. They may not look pretty, but they may work. I am thinking of adjustable combs and adjustable butt plates.

Ok, thanks guys, but do you know of a gun fitter in the midwest? I would like to contact one and see what they charge and I want a good one close to home if possible. I am looking for a phone number or web page of a gun fitter in the midwest. Or at least the closest to me in Kenosha, WI. I have heard of one in MO., but don't have his number, but I think I know someonr to call for his number. Just looking for other options (gun fitters).

Hugh Lomas in Elkart Lake, WI would be able to assist you with both fitting and modifying the gun, if needed.

Aaron Nelson The Country Gentleman has done more than a few for me. They travel to shoots all over, check their schedule. I met him in Va. he fitted a 684 Gold E Trap and a browning Citori.
He cut in a Soft adjustable comb on my wife Urika. The guy is good and worth trying to find out if he is going to be in your area.

Fred Wenig, as good as they get, especially for trap guns. Highly recommended and as nice a guy as you'd care to meet.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.
