Just wondering if anyone has tried Remington's Buckhammer sabot slug in their rifled barrels? Especially the 20 gauge 2 3/4" loads?? How did they perform??? I've tried Winchester Supreme Golds and they don't seem to offer much expansion. Lightfield Hybrids are okay but what about Remington Buckhammers?

Well, since I've received no replys to my question; I went out and bought a couple boxes of 20 ga. Remington Buckhammer sabot ammo. I tested them in my Browning Gold Deer Hunter and they shot excellently! At 25 yards a 3-shot grouped .850" and 1" @ 50 yards. They seem to have the similar ballistics as the Lightfield Hybrids, so now I know I can use either on without adjustment made to the scope. clap

Perhaps your bigger concern should be about why no one has mentioned (before me) why you want to use a 20 ga. slug at all. I have some credentials about shooting deer with slugs. When I was 16 (in 1946) I regularly shot deer in commercial apple orchards under special permit granted to the owners by NY State. I probably shot anywheres from 20 to 45 deer before I was 20 years old with slugs from a 12 ga. I had to follow any number of those deer at least 100 yards or more. Those deer were hit with a 1 0z. slug at ranges that never exceeded 90 feet or so. In my teenage days, the 16 ga. was rarely considered as a deer gun. The 20 ga. wasn't even thought of. The 20 ga. pushed the 16 ga. out as a bird load in later years. I never have seen anything that shows it to be a deer hunting load. (Forget the 'properly placed shot" crap. A deer pumps adrenalin like you wouldn't believe. Use a 12 which makes a bigger hole - and hope for the best! (Excuse an old man hollering at you) Smiler

Things have changed...Ever heard of the 454Casuall????Many buff taken with this handgun round. Shoots 240 gr at 1700fps. 20ga Winchester sabot shoots same bullet at 1900fps.

I have been shooting since I was 8. One of the first things I learned was how to read ballistics tables. I can "prove" from ballistics tables that a 22 fired from a pistol is more deadly than a 32 fired from a pistol. (foot lbs of energy) Want to match bullet holes? Smiler

It has been my experience over a lifetime that bench shooters and avid readers of ballistics tables have never set out to see if the numbers in print hold up in the field. In plain words, not only do they lack actual experience in shooting at live animals but sometimes the animals didn't read the book! If you think the 20 ga. is as good or even better than the 12 in using slugs on deer, then more power to you! At my age I don't bother to argue with fools.

Gerry;I am no kid either,I have been shooting since I was 6 in 1950,spent 8 years in the Marines. When I am not ranching,I work for an outfitter as a hunting guide.I am guessing I am entitled to my opinion and I never said I thought the 20 was better than a 12 just conveying what the article stated.W/regards

Hi Gerry,

The reason I am using a 20 gauge sabot slug, is due to a nerve injury in my right shoulder. As for the Remington Buckhammers, they are an oz in weight and have a velocity of 1,500 FPS. My shots at Deer will be under 75 yards, with most at 50 or less. I shot my first Deer with a 12 gauge slug back when I didn't have the issue with my shoulder. You're right inthat the 12 gauge is more affective and leaves a bigger hole. <Thanks for your reply>

When I was in High school my buddy Joe took at least one deer per year with his 20ga. He always got as many deer as he had a license for. I remember reading at the time that a 20ga was marginal for deer. All I had at the time was a bow, so my buddy still had me outgunned.

I've always been partial to 12 ga myself, but I quit shooting slugs due to the recoil. I've since moved to an area where rifles are allowed. If I move back East it's back to the bow or a 20ga for deer.

Just a little fuel on the fire......my boys and I and my friends all shoot 20 ga, most use Lightfield....we killed a bunch (60+) of gun deer this year and the only one we lost was shot by our taxidermist with a .308 Win.

I'm only 57 so I don't have all the experience you guys claim, but if you can find an easier to shoot shotgun killer than the 20 ga sabot slug, I don't know what it would be...very deadly and much nicer to shoot than a 12 ga!!

Guys, Since my first post on this topic of Remington Buckhammer sabot 20 gauge slugs; I've had the chance to test them out in my Browning Gold. At 75 yards I am receiving tight groups of around 1 1/2" for 5-shots, and recoil is mild. Looks like I've found the slug load I'll be using this fall. I have a 2.5-7 power Leupold Shotgun scope mounted on my Browning, and at the 7 power setting the groups were easy to make. Lighfield Hybrids also were very accurate but I wanted a little heavier slug. <Thanks again, Guys, for all your very helpful suggestions!>
