Hi all,
I'm in the process of trying to acquire a 16 gauge
mod 12 winchester. It appears to be in about 85%.
It is a field grade, no rib, just a bead. 28" full choke.Maybe it's a modified.
I'm thinking it's a mid-50's to 60's gun. I don't know the serial number, but I know it's not pre-WW2.
I'm guessing it's worth between 400, and 500 dollars. The owner is not sure whether to take it or leave it. Am I offering a fair price, or is this gun worth much more?

According to your description (and a quick flip thru a Blue Book), the gun is worth "about" $250-$275. (I know, Blue Book is only a starting point, but it gives you an idea).

Another reference would be Gun List if you can get ahold of one. It will show what guys are asking, today. Or check out the sites like www.gunsamerica.com , www.auctionarms.com , www.gunbroker.com , or any of the others like them. Search for a gun similar to yours & see what they price is. Notice whether any are actually SELLING at the asking prices...

The Model 12 seems to be one of those guns that will never die, somebody always wants one. Some regions are "hotter" than others for demand. However, I'd say your $400-$500 offer is high, if you aren't yet committed, I'd rethink it.

I figured I might be alittle high with 400.00, but I know i'd appreciate it, and it would be my sons first shotgun. I suppose I should shop around more. I believe the owner thinks he's sitting on a goldmine. Oh well.

When I bought one a couple of years back (a 16 ga Model 12, that is), I took my choice from 24 (!), and paid $280. That was at a gun shop in Boise, ID. They had about 500 model 12's, in all.

So, I'd say $400 was a good bit rich. FWIW, Dutch.

$400.00 to $500.00 is bit much, mid to higher 200's is more in the ball park.
But if you want to look at some New in the box types and prices...............

I had a Mod.12 in 16 gauge many years ago and if I remember correctly it had a short chamber I could not use modern factory loads in it. I guess the 16 gauge factory shells were shorter a long time ago. The gun you are looking at may be new enough for this not to be a problem. Bryan

The short chambers were on much earlier models if your aging is correct. Its year model can easily be checked using sn# against a chart in the back of Bluebook of Gun Values or just e-mail it to me. You might rethink the 16ga part for a first gun. 16 ga. ammo is quite limited, expensive, and the worst part is that the loads available are generally hot hunting loads (so old auto's function) that kick like a mule. A lite load in a 12 ga. to me is far superior in a about every aspect. I shoot my mod 12's often and just love them. Good Luck
