Is the 10 gauge a dieing breed???

It seem that not many manufactors are making ammo for the 10 gauge. I wanted to try Remington HD on Geese and Ducks but I don't believe they make it. I have also noticed when you go into a sporting good store their 10 gauge inventory is next to none on the shelves. Has the 3 1/2" 12 gauge replaced the 10 gauge?

Thanks

Steve

I own 3 shot guns in the big 10. I load my own ammo, just like I do for everything else.

While I think the 10 has suffered from the rise of the 12ga 3.5" I don't think it is dead. Folks that do a lot of patterning know the larger bore diameter of the 10ga is superior with HEAVY payloads. You do not get great patterns out of 2oz of shot getting strangled through a 12ga bore.

You have to look a little, but there are plenty of loads out there for the 10ga.

Hey Steve Remington does make the HD in 10ga. My local Cabelas has it in stock in 3-1/2"
I just bought some 12ga HD 3-1/2" and they had quite a bit of 10ga next to it. (I think in BB, 2, and 4) If you cant find it anywhere let me know, I'll send you a box out to try.

Very good question Steve. I am an avid waterfowler - goose and duck. My shotgun for many years was a Browning BPS 10 ga with 24" barrel. I used #3 shot on duck and F shot on geese. Greatest shot I ever made was a lone goose at 80 yards with my 10. I sold my 10 to a hunting partner and bought a Ruger Red Label 12 ga. I have never shot anything but 2 3/4 thru it. 3.5" shells have a column affect as opposed to the 10's bigger bore. The 10 is alive and well. The 3.5 12 has not nor ever will replace it. I went to the 12 for an O/U with two chokes. I use this gun year round for clays.

Not dead by any stretch in my neck of the woods, especially heading east tot he Delmarva Peninsula where goos hunting is the king of sports. Ammo selection is never a problem in the area.

I use a 10ga for goose hunting. I also use a 12ga 3 1/2" gun when hunting over water where both ducks and geease are likely. Using the same shot size, the 10ga hit appreciably harder.

Like Wildfowl and a couple others have mentioned, the 10 ga outpatterns the 3 1/2 in 12ga . When there is big geese to shoot at longer ranges the 10 rules the roost !

I don't think the 3 1/2" 12ga has replaced the 10ga. I think the 10ga and 3 1/2 12ga sales have slowed because of expensive and heavy 10ga guns and expensive ammo for both. I had a fantastic 24" barreled BPS 10 that a buddy talked me out of. I used it for everything when I could get #3 shot for it. Because of the bigger bore the 10 is much better than a 3 1/2 12. Now I use 2 3/4 12 most of the time with an ocassional 3" 12.
