different ammo can make the difference. You should be using a cantilever rifled bbl with a scope. Sabots, not foster type slugs. Groups should average around 3.5 to 4" at 100 yds. shooting 5 shot groups. When u get ammo that shoots well, buy all of that lot number as ammo changes some between lot numbers.

Surfman: You don't mention the barrel length. I remember when Rem.rifled slug barrels were 20" which always seemed too short to me. (later barrels were 21" and still too short as far as I'm concerned. I have used a Hastings barrel (24") on the Rem. 870 and on a Rem.11-87. As nearly as I recall (It's about 10 years ago)the 870 using sabots, 2 3/4" shells (the 3" sabots are brutal and don't seem worth it) my groups were anywheres from 3-4" at 75 yards. (using a Hastings barrel allowing for a Leupold 1x4 scope) With the Hastings barrel (24") on the 11-87, I got groups of about 2" regularly at 75 yards, using 2 3/4" shells (sabots) and a Leupold 1x4 scope. I just can't tell you why the groups were noticeably tighter with an auto. Perhaps others with more experience can say why a pump didn't seem to shoot as tight. (BTW, I haven't shopped for a Hastings in years but I can't believe they would run as much as that shop quote of $500) Anyway, good luck whatever you do.
