I decided I would try my hand at the lost art of reloading brass 12 guage shells. I bought some Magtech hulls from Midway as well as some 1/4" cork wads, over powder wads, and some over shot cards. These hulls use standard large rifle primers. I decided to make up some light loads to start with for use in a Remington double I recently purchased. I inserted a primer(Win LR magnum type), used 15 grains of American Select, an over powder wad, a 1/4" cork wad, a Win AA 7/8 ounce wad, 7/8 of an ounce of #8 shot and an over shot card. I glued the card down with a glue gun as a recent poster on this forum did. When I dropped a hammer on this load, all that was heard was a "poof". The shot rolled out of the end of the barrel. The plastic, cork, and over powder wads were stuck 1/2 way down the barrel. The same load in a plastic AA hull goes "Bang!" not "poof" and the clay turns to dust or feathers fly The powder just failed to ignite with the large magnum rifle primers I used. The only real diffence between these loads is the primer. Is anyone using the Magtech brass hulls with some semblance of success? I tried 6 rounds in 2 shotguns today with the same result. Don't have a clue what to do next. Thanks for the help, ---Catter

I was paging through the recent posts and saw this. Read it twice and I guess I'm a bit sleepy this morning (dog got me up hour early) because I'm not sure I understand... It seems, again did I get this right(?), that you used the same components you use in a plastic case to load the brass case. Aren't the components a bit "loose" in the brass case. Seems to me it went "poof" instead of "bang" because the gas all blew around the shot column in that loose case and didn't have enough oomph to get the payload out the barrel. In my limited brass case experience, I had to load the brass cases with "muzzleloading" wads to get a tight enough fit for function. I was able to get ML wads in the correct size for the interior dimensions of the brass case. Just like when I started shooting (before plastic one piece wads) there was a long bit of cushion wads on top of the overpowder wad which was, over powder! Then the shot and then the overshot card in the case mouth. I also seem to remember something about using large pistol primers as was originally (currently?) done. I think that the 109 primer is really a pistol primer in a "battery cup" or stand alone container for the primer. If I missed something (I did see the overpowder wad but no cushion wads), please let me know.
