A friend of mine gave me an older Ithaca shotgun, minus the barrel. The newer barrels do not fit on the older guns, and according to Ithaca if I find an older barrel, that would not fit either. They claim that with the older guns, the barrels were fitted individually. Ithaca siad they could fit a barrel to the gun, but when all is said and done, I am looking at spending over $300 for a barrel for this gun, and it just aint worth it to me to spend that kind of money. What I am wondering, is if I find an Ithaca barrel, older or newer style, can I take it to a smith and have him fit the barrel to my gun, and if so, approximately how much would something like that cost. Thanks for any replies.

You are not being clear. Ithaca has been around for over 100 years. Which shotgun are you referring to? If it is a sxs, you will need to find a gun made almost the same year in some cases. Ithaca went through many design changes of their sxs guns. Normally for a sxs, if the barrels are correct, you still can not just slap on a set from another gun. The barrels have to be put "on face". This requires a decent smith who knows what they are doing. The usual cost, if you supply the correct barrels is about $50 - $100. The M37 also went through a change in the early 50's. The way the barrel is mated to the receiver was changed. Again, which shotgun model are you talking about? What is the serial number? Pete [ 09-10-2003, 22:39: Message edited by: Quail Wing ]
