You can get a 3" barrel and put on a 2-3/3" gun and use stell only. Remington will recommend this also. However, the 3" steel barrel will have two gas ports so you can do harm with lead 3" loads in it. The 3" barrel has larger gas ports in the barrel so it will not reject a standard trap loads.

So going to a 3" barrel has it limitions. I have done this and talked to Remington Gun smiths on this at the Grand American. They showed the physical differences. The reason like they said, since they have a 1187 out there there is no reason why Remington needs to be concern on this restrictions. This way, they can sell more guns.

Have the existing barrel fitted for screw in tubes or purchase a barrel threaded for tubes. With good 2 3/4 turkey loads and a tight choke tube you will kill turkeys at all reasonable ranges. When you decide to do a little rabbit or grouse hunting just screw in the improved cylinder tube and load-er her up with the Wally World specials.

I have the 1100 with the standard full bbl. that patterns well enough to kill turkeys out to 40 yds. with 1 1/2 oz. of #6 copper. Have a spare bbl. choked improved cylinder. This was all purchased before Rem Chokes. My opinion forget trying to fit this shotgun with a 3 inch chambered barrel.

An 1100 Remington in this house fitter with a, Steel Shot 3" Magnum barrel on a 2 3/4" receiver will cycle a wide range of loads including most 2 3/4 3 dram 1 1/8 oz loads and a lot of 3" non-toxic loads. For shotgun games, one here likes Winchester Sporting Clay loads cycle well in this gun/barrel.

There are a bunch of 3" non-toxic loads which work well in it also. It has worked so well that my wife has nearly forgotten that she has a Rem Choked Skeet barrel and a Mod, fixed choke barrel.

BTW if you really want to clobber a turkey, buy some Heavi-shot #6 and be happy.
