Everyone, Picked up an old Browning Auto-5 in 16 guage today. It is not a "Sweet Sixteen" just a "standard" model. I'm usually pretty good at dating old Brownings but this one has me puzzeled. Serial number begins with an X - (X308**) I've never seen that before. Anyone have a clue? Thanks for your help. -Vlad

In 1976 Browning started preceeding serial numbers with a letter. The first year, 1976, it was Z, the next year, 1977, it was Y, and in 1978 it was X. The letter went down in the alphabet each year. It went on like that until 1998. Each year the numbering behing he letter started over and if memory served me, it began with 1001.
