The 28 ga 3/4 ounce load is a remarkably well balanced load for the bore diameter and seems to have more killing power than its shot charge weight would indicate. There have been multiple tests over the years which have shown that heavier loads are really not any more efficient down range. If you are trying to get maximum effective pattern width at very close ranges, say for woodcock or grouse in very heavy cover, there could be an advantage for hevier loads, but probably not by much.

If you want heavier loads, going to a larger ga is the most effective way to accomplish this.

I know the 3\4 oz. load is considered the standard for the 28 gauge shotty. There are other loads available on the market either thru retailers or reloading. Where is the best source for reloading info. for these other loads or do some of you guys currently reload 7\8 oz. or even 1oz. loads? What is your opinion of these loads? I have the gun coming I need to get up on the loading aspect quickly. Dove use almost entirely.Thank you for your interest.

Redriverbio,
I just sent a 28 gauge O/U back for a refund and ordered a Verona 20/28 two barrel O/U set. I am not planning on reloading. I am going to be using mine mainly for quail with some tune up work at a skeet range. If you have a Walmart handy and who doesnt, they are selling Winchester AA hs shells for $6.37 a box. That is for 7 1/2's. I have 30 boxes waiting the arrival of the gun. That will do me just fine and I can sell the cases on ebay for anywhere from $35 to $42 for 250 hulls. That makes it cost in the $2.50 range for me to shoot new ammo all the time and I do not have to buy a loader. More to the point, I was going to buy a Ponsness Warren 800 and I would never recoup that cost. I can buy Estate ammo for the 20 for the cost to reload also. Becomes a no brainer for me. I did always enjoy reloading but lately I just do not have the time. Just something to think about.
