Here are my trap loads.

Some of these loads are hotter than the chart values by .2 to .3 grains due to the availability of bushings. I have shot thousands of these rounds with no bad consequences but Use at your own risk!!!

I usually use Claybuster wads since they are like half the price of name-brand, but I dont like the Windjammer ones. I prefer Remington STS hulls, and I color coded my loads using them (greens for 16 yds w/ 8.5 shot, gold for handicap with 7.5 shot). This also worked well in sporting clays, I'd carry half 8.5s and half 7.5s, which reduced choke changing. I would set my wad pressure with the STS hulls, although I forgot how many lbs I was using.

Most all my loads were 1 1/8th, although I played around with 1oz and 1400 fps 7/8th oz loads.

MEC Bushing 32 or 33 (17.9 or 18.6 grains), Hodgedon Clays powder, WIN AA or Remington STS hull, WIN 209 primer, WAA12 Winchester or Claybusters equivilent wad, 1oz to 1 1/8th oz shot, ~1200 fps. The 18.4 grains is what the chart calls for, at 11,300 psi, so the 18.6 grain load I use is pretty hot.

I have also tried a similar load but with Hodgdon International Clays.

MEC Bushing 29 for 19.3 grains of International Clays, Win AA or Remington STS, Win 209 primer, WAA12 wad or Claybuster equivilent, 1oz to 1 1/8th, ~1170 fps. You can use up to 21.1 grains of this for 1250 fps, and 11,500 psi.

When I started out reloading shotgun shells, my first load was a duplicate of Winchester AA Heavy 3 dram Target loads. It was a Winchester AA Wad, MEC Bushing 27 for 19.1 grains of Winchester AA-Plus powder, Win 209 primer, 1 1/8th oz of shot, Win WAA12 wad, about 1200 fps. This is only about 10,400 psi.

I switched to Clays powder because it was easier to get and I think Clays at least burns a little cleaner.

The main thing, IMO, is to keep the primer-powder-wad combination consistent. Older hulls will open easier, giving more velocity and less recoil. Many wads can use 1 different weights of shot, and the load will not have to be totally rethought. If you scour the charts long enough you can probably find a 1 1/8th heavy target load and a 1 1/4 hunting load, where you could use the same powder, hulls, primers, and wads, and powder, just changing the powder charge.
