Steel shot barrels

Just bought a used 870 Express that isn't that old and looks pretty much new which the previous owner says it was. It is a sythetic model with the 26" barrel and screw in choke.

My question is how do I tell if it is safe to shoot steel shot out of it. I can't see anything on the barrel about it even thought there are some stamps but I don't know what they mean.

Thanks

Greg

Call Remington and ask is probably the fastest. Browning told me only their guns with screw in chokes were safe for steel. I would expect Reminton to be the same but it is best to inquire.

Check the choke tubes for listed shot and shot sizes. My Rem chockes tell me the Steel shot sizes I can use for their various choke tubes.

Yes your barrel is safe for steel and if you still have the modified choke tube it is okay too. Remington does market full chokes that are marked for "steel shot".
