Okay, I know I saw it somewhere, but now I can't find it again. In a recent gun magazine, I saw an article on a new Beretta 28 gauge O/U built on a dedicated 28 gauge (baby) frame. Can someone help me by telling me the model name or designation and the retail price?

Beretta has a new model 28 gauge in the Silver pidgeon IV on what they call a "scaled receiver" but their web site still shows the same weight as the 20 but it is likely a mistake, or hope it is. Price is $2800.

Thanks, Chic.

The magazine article I saw indicated that the receiver was a true 28 gauge size, which would be really neat, especially since the Beretta receiver has no underlugs and is already a very shallow and compact receiver.

I have a wonderful 28 gauge Beretta BL-3 that I truly love, but as with women, a younger, fancier model with a smaller waist always makes your mouth water. And even if I could get one, the question would be "can I afford it?" Wink

I shot one that belonged to a friend. It was a "Silver Pigeon"

They do weigh almost 7#s.

I can not see the point in having a 28ga that weighs as much or more than a 20ga, unless it was a dedicated "sporting" gun.

For a field gun I would opt for a DeHaan U2 @ 1/3 the price and a full # less weight.

Stonecreek,
Verona's 28 gauge is built on a sized frame and weighs 5 3/4#. The 20 is 6 1/4#. I have a 20/28 combo and of course the 28 weighs right near 6 1/4#. Not a disadvantage to me. I would like to have one at 5 3/4 but the combo is a sweet way to go.

I did see an ad for a 28 that went 4 pounds 10 ounces and it was incredible. It also was a Krieghoff and they wanted like two new car prices for it.

Verona 28 info

Jeff, that part is easy to figure. Tooling costs for a line are spread among the number of guns made. I would venture a guess that they sell 20 times more 20 gauges than 28's. Same with the ammo. It is not a ripoff, just smaller amounts of product result in higher setup and tooling costs. I would imagine in the case of ammo (pun not intended) that they may be milking it a bit. Okay more than a bit.

Roger that on the ammo! But, I have noticed it coming down a bit with the popularity of .410 and 28 sky-rocketing.

As for the guns, same as in the knife biz I suppose - it takes longer to make fewer and smaller pieces.

At any rate, start shooting an ulrealight 28 and you are ruined for life! (in a good way).

Give him a call, he says he has them in stock.
A light 28 will spoil you forever.

Jeff,
I have shot 1200 rounds of 28 gauge hunting and skeet shooting since last September and it is getting worse right now. I have 3565 AA hs 410 empty hulls being mailed to me to fuel another small gauge addiction.

You and I can never be friends...I too suffer from the same "weakness"...get us together and the world will come to an end....albeit a fun ending!

Damn those little shooters are fun aren't they!!!

But , now I'm really going to get myself into trouble....Looking into live pigeon shooting!!!

I simply have no self control!

Rusty,
I have bought 3 flats (250 rnds) of 28 gauge from Walmart and got the other empties watching Ebay like a hawk. Actually have them bookmarked with an email if they come up. I got all my 410 hulls through a guy who sold me ssome 28 ga hulls.

NSSA has a web site and although they are out of 28 ga hulls at present, they may have some soon and they have a fairly decent price. That way you can avoid the maniac buyers on Ebay. I have seen them go for more than loaded shells there.

So, Chic, have you reloaded any 28s with Hevi-Shot? I would like to find someone to reload a few boxes for me with about 7/8 or even an ounce of Hevi-shot, 6s or 7 1/2s for grouse hunting. My 28 is a Red Label, which, pardon the sacrilege, I shoot better than my 20 ga. Citori..... What I'm REALLY waiting for is a Gold Label on a true 28 ga. frame! It would be well under 6 lbs I'm sure.

Mike, I have only loaded it with 3/4 oz. of #9 lead for skeet shooting. Do you have to use a non toxic shot where you hunt? We dont but when i go to South Dakota next year for Pheasants, I may have to in some areas. I will be well armed there with 12, 20's and my 28.

Chic, no we can shoot lead at upland birds. Non-toxic for waterfowl only. My thought was that the Hevi-Shot might give the little 28 a little more range and poop when it gets there vs. lead. Have you loaded Hevi-Shot for any hunt loads? I've only used it for turkey, but it seems to give more range and knock-down than lead....

Mike, no at the cost of Hevishot, I will use lead. I only hunt California quail and chukar with it. It is my main shotgun when I am skeet shooting though.

I have killed a lot of doves a few ducks and some quail with the 28 and have found that 3/4 oz of #8 seems to work way better than it is supposed to. I have tried the 7/8 oz and even 1 oz loads but still prefer 3/4 oz. I keep my eyes open and pick up a flat of WWAAs on those rare occasions that some one has them on sale, then I load them until there is nothing left.
