Just bought an Ithica Mag 10 Deluxe. It is full choke. To use steel shot, should I have the barrel cut to modified or can I get a modified choke put in it, or?????

Thank you,

Bill

With mine, I had them cut the barrel back and used it as a cylinder choke (it shoots remarkably tight this way...), but it probably would be better to have it set up for changeable choke tubes- then you can use it for turkey as well as waterfowl.

I would also note that the barrels are remarkably soft compared to the newer guns, so don't be surprised if you notice some scoring of the barrel after shooting a few boxes of larger diameter steel (T or F made mine look pretty bad...)

For less than $150 you can have the barrel threaded for choke tubes

You might be able to find a modified barrel? The Mag 10 came out way before steel but the barrel is probably more than capable of handling the stuff. The bore (at least on mine) is not chrome plated. With 2-1/4oz of lead they make an amazing duck gun. As a note the first guns were 'tuned' for the common roll crimped 10ga. ammo of the time and had digestion problems with the pie crimped shells. I remember calling Ithaca for a new extractor and they asked for the gun back. They told me they would rebuild it and return it for free, so I let them have it. It has worked flawlessly since.
