I know the Ultra XS has a generaly good rep; can anyone tell me why the 28 ga models are selling below cost? Did they just make too many for the market?

Wasn't aware of a bargain out there. Where are you seeing these below-cost 28's?

CDNN in Amarillo has 28" and 30" 28 ga Ultra XSs' for $1499. That seems about $300 less than I see elsewhere but I don't know all the places to look. If we get three guys together on a group buy they drop to $1449. They said yesterday that they have about 30 left in each barrel length.
