I was wondering about accuracy of slug guns. Which 12ga slug guns are you using and what kind of accuracy with what brand of slug are you getting at 25, 50, 75, 100yrds? I was thinking of the Browning Silver 12ga rifled slug gun. Anyone have one? How do you like it?

Well I dont' know beans about slug guns. But out of desperation I took out my smoothbore CIL with a bead front site and nothing else. Shot me a great big cow elk at an honest 100 yards. Now I'd like to know more about "real" slug guns too-I might have to get one. the chef

Slug guns and slugs have come a long way and the technology of slugs continue to improve. I personally shoot 12ga 2 3/4" Winchester Platnum Tip Sabots out of a fully rifled Browning A-bolt and can get 3 inch groups at 100 yards and have confidently killed deer past 150 yards. These slugs are pushing 400 grains of copper jacketed lead at 1700fps. Here in Illinois we do not have a chance to use rifles so you learn to squeeze everything out of a shotgun that you can! They no longer make the Browning A-Bolt shotgun, but they can still be had on the used market. Stay away from the choke-tubed versions as they are not nearly as accurate. I have no experience with the Browning Silver slug gun. Generally semi-autos are not as accurate because of the action set-up. If you are on a budget, check out the New England/H&R single shots. They build great slug set-ups that will shoot really good and not break the bank. Only catch is they are single shots.

There seem to be two types of shotguns for slugs those with smooth bores and those with rifled bores to differant critters all togather. For a gun that is just going to be use just with slugs go with one of the rifled models. then take it out with 4 or 5 differant high tech slugs and see what one groups the best. The are 150 yard gun If not more. For smooth bore guns with good sites I have seen them shoot great and not very well at all. My current 870 riot with peep site well keep them all on a 8x11 paper at a 100 4 inch groups at 50 with Rem foster slugs. I sen lots of 870 riot guns have no trouble puting them into 5 to six in groups at 50 yards with just a bead site if the shooter knows what they are doing. Most smooth bores well kill deer out to a 100 with sights with just a bead 50 is the max for me.

Found an A-Bolt @ Collector's Firearms in Houston http://www.collectorsfirearms....ils.php?itemID=34612 How's that $895.00 price tag compare to ??? I recently purchased a Savage 220 20 gauge with the Accu-Trigger. This is a radical departure for me from the Rem 870 smoothbore I've had for a number of years. 2 3/4" Remington Sluggers would give me realistic 4" 100 yard groups with a low powered scope. I hope this new arrangement gets it well under 3" and a bit more range. I'm still waiting for the EGW Picatinny mount to arrive for the Leupold VX-1 3x9 slug scope that I purchased for it. I hope I end up with a 125 yard slug gun. But all this is a bit 'newfangled' for me. My son still kids me that I just got an ATM card in the past couple years. That said, I still hunt with my face to the wind and patience is important. I think they call that 'old school'. Got the EGW rings and mounts and put a 3-9 Leupold on the Savage 220 I got. Took it to the range today with some older Federal Premium Hydra-Shok sabots (3"). With the removable bolt was able to visually 'bore sight' it and my first shot at 25 yards was spot on. Took two more sighters, one at 50 and one at 100 yards. I then shot a 3-shot, 1" group (.920 center to center). Won't know if this was a fluke until the next time I go out as I used my remaining meager supply of ammo to do three-shot function tests shooting offhand (It functioned fine). I did encounter two things to be aware of on this gun. First, one must cycle the bolt with gusto and all the way back for positive ejection. When loading up the magazine I had trouble getting the second round inserted until I figured out the rim was hanging up on the top of the brass of the other shell. I'm really going to like this gun! It handles and feels like a rifle (not a clunky slug gun). The accu-trigger is great. Felt recoil was in the .270 range.

I have a Browning Gold cantilever rifled slug gun. Federal 2 3/4 Barnes 1 oz hp slugs shoot well. I used a 1 X 4 Leupold and as I recall maybe 3 inch groups (3 shot) at 100. Kills quite well have shot 3 deer with it all 1 shot kills. All inside 80 yards. So far 100% reliable and a buddy has identical gun. BigB
