My dad has his grandmother's LC 12ga Field grade that needs new stock and a little bit of action work. I would like to do this for him as a gift, as he used this gun up until the early 70's when both barrels started going off at once with him and gave him a little bit of a headache! The butt stock is cracked and has been "fixed" for some years and will definately need to be refitted.

Who would be the best to send it to that is trustworthy to do good work? and about how much would it run me?
Thanks!
TBT

TBT-

I would recommend a couple of fellows right here in our great state.

Rich Kaysa with RK Shooting Specialties is good and could do everything you want. He specializes in Double Rifles and Double Barrel Shotgun work. He's located here in San Antonio.

Kirk Merrington. He is located in Kerrville, Texas. He's a Brit and an English trained, in the old school, barrel maker. He's real good!! I had the pleasure of visiting him in his shop.

Either one of these guys is a good decision.

Good luck!

TBT,

Most folks charge a bit more for labor to restock and "Elsie" because of the sidelock plates--they require precise fitting. I'd get estimates from the previously mentioned shops there in TX as well as a couple from elsewhere. Bob's Custom Gun Shop in Polson, MT recently completed my 16 gauge LC Smith and did a good job.

The other option would be to have a gunsmith repair the doubling problem and buy a take-off of original wood from someone. Walt Schiesel knows a lot about these things and might also recommend a topnotch gunsmith to you. His phone us 714-956-2869. He is a gentleman with whom it is a pleasure to visit.

The price may vary widely for the same work--depends on many things including the price of the replacement wood. Shop around and look at some of the different gunsmiths' work.

Good Hunting,

Thanks Andy & Mark for the information! Didn't realize we had some Texans who did work on the old girls. Trigger, I'll let you know what I find out.

I talked to the folks at Wenig a month or so back, and they might be another choice. They did not seem to think an Elsie would be any additional charge.

Plus, they will custom fit the stock to you for a very, very reasonable cost. HTH, Dutch.
