While I post regularly on a number of other boards I only recently started posting here. I figured I would introduce myself and post a few pics.

I grew up, and currently spend the majority of my hunting time in a shotgun only deer hunting area. Therefore I spend most of time hunting with rifled shotguns.

I have owned quite a few over the years, all of which have been fully rifled bolt action shotguns.

I currently own three different rifled shotguns, one of which was purchased this spring.

Here are the three guns I currently own.

1).Browning A-bolt Rifled Shotgun, Weaver V3 1.5-3x20 scope
2).Tar-Hunt RSG-Mountaineer 20ga
3).Savage 210, Leupold VX-II 2-7x33

I just mounted a new Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40 on the Tar-Hunt...

Here I am with a buck I took last fall with the Savage 210...

Any comments or questions are welcome, and if anyone ever needs any help putting together a rifled shotgun setup for whitetails feel free to contact me.

I have done a fair share of slug hunting myself. At first I used a plain jane Rem 870, but then I was able to locate a Browning A-Bolt exactly like the one you have pictured. They are a nice gun aren't they. And when the deer are hit by a 12 guage slug at reasonable range they usually don't even take one step before they go down.

Now I hunt with Rifles, but I wouldn't sell the A-bolt.

jcchartboy-

How well does that Savage shoot at 100 yards? What slugs have you tried? I've been thinking about getting one.

Thanks.

GLC,

It shoots excelent. In the hands of an accomplished slug gun shooter I am confident the gun would shoot sub 1.5 moa, 3 shot groups.

My groups are usually in the 1.75-3 in range at 100yds. However, I usually shoot in less than ideal conditions.

While this might not sound spectacular it is only because I am being absolutely honest about how I have actually shot. Have I shot better?...of course, but I often shoot in windy conditions, and off a marginal shooting bench so I just wanted to give an idea of "real world" performance, vs perfect benchrest conditions.

I can safely say that the Savage is unquestionably the best rifled shotgun for the money. (Others will argue for the H&R ultra, but that is another story, the reality is that the Savage is all the H&R is, and doesn't require a bull barrel and weighted stock to do it.)

After a great deal of testing I have found that the Remington Core Lokt Ultra's are clearly the best Sabots to shoot out of this gun. Not only are they one of the most accurate sabots, they also offer the best downrange trajectory of all the modern sabots on the mkt. (Actually the new Hornady SST's trajectory is very close.)

If you are looking for accuracy, the Savage is the way to go. If you are looking for quick handling, the Browning A-bolt is the way to go. If you are looking for a world class gun with both exceptional accuracy and handling...the Tar_Hunt is the only answer..nothing else even comes close to comparing.

(This is perfect example of a 3 shot group taken at 100yds with the savage last year...I was shooting in 95 degree summer weather, and I was in a hurry, so by the third shot the barrel was very hot. Obviously when this occurs the gun tends to "string" groups(notice the clear diagonal orientation). Despite that fact the group is still 1.75 in. I believe it is safe to say the group would have been much better under "ideal" conditions. However, I rarely shoot under "ideal conditions.)

Thanks for the response.

I have a Marlin 512 which shoots pretty good. I find that the standard 2 3/4 Remington Copper solids work best for me. I average 2-4" groups off the bench at 100. The Marlin is pretty good but extraction is often weak. If I work the bolt fast after a shot, sometimes the shell sticks in the chamber and I have to pick it out with a knife.

The Savage looks good.

The Copper solids also shoot exceptional well in my Savage. However, if you compare the trajectories of the Copper solids to the Core Lokts you will find that the Core Lokts shoot much flatter. In fact assuming an identical 50 yd zero the Copper solids are 2 in and 4 in lower at 100 and 125 yds respectively when compared to the Core Lokts.

Here are the ballistics tables if you are interested....

BTW...

Hit the range yesterday to do some final work on another gun, but also took a little time to work on the Tar-Hunt.

I can't say how happy I was to finally have everything go smoothly while sighting it in. I had the gun 95% sighted in on the third shot!

Here is the first three shot group from the gun at 50yds...The first shot was upper left, the second I pulled a little and was lower right, after readjusting I made a good third shot...right in the first hole..(this load was sighted in to be about 1 in high at 50yds, and was shooting a touch to the left, so the bottom right was clearly shooter error, this is somewhat typical of my shooting)

I have no question that this gun is capable of one whole groups at 50yds...

Those are nice rifles (yes they're rifles, just happen to be 12 ga rifles!). I'm a lefty, I wish someone made a left hand bolt gun.

I currently use a BPS that I'm happy with the accuracy, not great but good enough for deer. Most likely if I get another slug gun it'll be a slug barrel for my Encore. One of my friends has the bull barrel NEF. Extremly accurate but the thing is so heavy it needs wheels.

I've not had luck with copper solids in either my BPS on my sons Ithacas. I have much better luck with Winchester partitions, both in accuracy and the effect on deer. Haven't tried the Hornadys yet but I will this summer.

Yes but the last time I checked they were well over two grand. Not that they are over priced, they are pretty much a custom rifle, but they are out of my price range. Put a good scope on one and you'll probably be pushin $3000.00!

Ohio,

You are right on all accounts...2600$ plus shipping for the gun, 300$+/- for a scope, then add rings, bases etc. You would be lucky to get it done for three grand...

Try a NEF 20ga Ultra and Lightfield slugs. Kills deer like Lightning...a little heavy, but no recoil to complain about!! $400 will set it up really nice!!

Check this page at Tar Hunt though. I do not own one, but if you can pick up a cheap 870 I think this would be a way to go if a pump is ok
