I have an 8ga SxS & Single shot. Reloading components for the 8ga is getting 'better', but is still lacking in many ways. Gulandi makes the only readily accessable plastic shot wad and that only has a .5" cup. I have ordered some Mylar sheets to cut shot wrappers but they are not cheap. Can I use paper to wrap the shot column? My barrels lead up with no wrap and I would think that paper would be an inexpensive shot wrapper.

I know that for large payloads and when using short shotcups people use Mylar or Teflon wraps to protect the barrel from leadding & decrease friction. The wrap is a barrier between the shot and the barrel. I also know people paper patch bullets for rifles to do the same thing.

Has anyone ever paper wrapped their shot to acomplish this? Any additional thoughts/warnings?

I've got a few rounds set up like this and am going to try them this weekend, or not depending on what feedback I get.

I've used paper (and just about everything else that seemed plausable) to "patch" both shot and slugs in the .410. Depending on the paper it works with varying degrees of success. You might want to try Tyvec (Tyvek?). You don't need to buy a roll, office supply stores sell big envelopes made of it.

There has to be a fairly cheap source for mylar but I havent found it. You can also try photographic sheet film or roll film if you have a source. Take the emulsion off with clorox. That stuff is tough and works well. Thick sheet film or Xray also film works good as clear overshot wads for roll crimping.

I've never had a problem with anything I've tried. Just watch the total payload weight.
