swampshooter,

I would certainly agree with you about the Kents. The cigarettes weren't so great but Kent Steel was my favorite steel shot. Your patterns with mod.choke and #3 ought to be great. I used the 2 3/4 Kents in #2 with a "modified trap" barrel on my old 1100 and it killed them about as high as anybody should be shooting. I have never seen another barrel stamped modified trap. I figured it was something like improved modified. A dime will slide thru it unlike any full choke I have ever tried.

Waaaay off topic but I have to throw this in:
Does anyone know what the micronite filter on Kent cigarettes was made of? Answer is Asbestos.

Good stuff, merg......love hearing anything that echoes of vintage duck hunting lore. I've heard from others that love their Olt calls.....and IIRC they are now being made again.

+1 on the great tales from the past, and thanks for sharing, Merg.

Norty: not that in love with old duck hunting stories. I gave you one of the bibles to read and you didn't even crack it!

I fired one out of a Mossberg one time and that was it for me
It's funny you mention that. I had EXACTLY the same experience with one about 20 yrs ago - Forked Deer River in W. Tn. Someone had that gun in 3 1/2" and when I said I've never shot one of those, it got me a quick invite. I pulled the trigger one time, handed it right back and have never shot another one (the same thing also happened once with a No.1 Ruger .458 Win Mag).

Early on here stevens said he uses the Win Dry Lok 3" in #3s. That is in fact exactly what I've used whenever I can find a good deal on them since the days they first came out.

I'm very tempted to mention numbers of dux killed with those, but it would violate a self-imposed rule I have about not doing body counts here, birds or deer either one. But, it is a substantial number. And those #3s in Dry Lok IMO are just the ticket. There are other brands and other sizes I've tried, recently the BBs, which I like too. But the lion's share of the damage has been caused with the #3s.

One thing real important, again, IMO. On the 3" I always get the 1 3/8 oz load, not the 1 1/4. I get it because it's the most shot I can find in a 3" shell and want that extra advantage. The cost difference is not a big deal. 1 1/4 oz works just fine and I've used those too. But I highly recommend the 1 3/8 oz loads. Just keep in mind I'm talking Miss. Flyway birds.

I also like the 1 3/8 oz for sentimental reasons. It's what Nash Buckingham shot in a 3" Magnum. It has got to be a good idea if he used it.

On the duck stories, I've already told some of mine here and won't weary anyone with more. But, Merg and I both are Arkansas hunters. I'm more Arkansas first, then Tn and Ms. We've both been at it a long time. And my eyes are going too. I'm afraid I'll soon be joining an endless list of hunting pals who've had to admit it's time...

Just FYI, I will *never* tire of hearing good stories of waterfowling, be they old or new. I've enjoyed yours very much, so please don't stop because you believe others may bore of them!
