I've got one Jeffe.

It's not equivalent to a good Gen2+ in my opinion but a deal cheaper.

IT has advantages and disadvantages as you may expect.

Have a read through this mate: Review, tips and tricks.

They have a rail on the side, my advice is to get a good IR laser for it as otherwise the image can be very laggy. The on board IR is only good for 75 yards max on a overcast night IME.

The recording function sounds cool but I've never managed to get organised enough to record anything.

Here's a comparison a buddy on a UK forum did of gen2+ ATN nightspirit and the digisight.

looks ideal to me .. what is the best illuminator to get with this? Since i won't be shooting past 150 anyway....

can't decide -- 257 roberts or 358 winchester ...

I went with the Pulsar 940 IR flashlight.

http://www.pulsar-nv.com/product.aspx?prid=25

The laser has more range but this one at half the price is good enough for the unit IMO, has an adjustable focus and power adjust.

It take 2 AA batteries but for some reason the batteries need to have a long "nose" at the positive terminal. I don't know if batteries in Belarus are different to that in the UK but the battery cover for the sight itself is a pain to get on because of it.

As to the calibre, I'm not sure, is it for that moderated single shot you mentioned on that other thread?

If you're going to moderate it then I would say go for the .358.

From what I can see ( well, hear) fast buring powders moderate better than slow buring powders in say a .30.06, which I am assuimg is due to the lower pressure of the gases exiting from the muzzle (Isn't quickload a wonderful thing?) .

The .257 will probably use slower powders than the .358 and maybe even a little more powder full stop if you use the fastest powder you can get a decent load with.

I think you can also chop the barrel of the .358 back more than you could a .257 without worrying so much about velocity loss for the same reason, the rifle would then be handier, if you'll pardon the pun, with the moderator stuck the end of it. Since it'syour rifle and not mine and again consulting quickload, how about an 16-18 incher?

But really and truly, go with the .358 becasue it makes the bigger hole! Big Grin

Forgot to mention, this torch attaches to the rail on the sight but you may have to pack it out to get in pointing in the right direction.

my 257 and my 358 (these in question, mind you) are both heavy for caliber guns .. in fact, the 257 is a hoot to shoot, as its a TRUCK axle! both are douglas #5 contours! the 257 was a gift abotu 20 years ago, and the 358 was the first "big" bore rifle i built ... figured if these are already heavy, i wouldn't have any trouble with them weighing about 1-1.2# more ..

i like hunting piggies in the moonlight.. and have places i can go that will allow me to pop them with the right gear ...

i doubt i get a moderator on either -- but i might ....

of course, if i could talk a buddy out of his 458 socom bolt gun.. that would be a horse of another color ...

someone buy my RSM and let me scratch this itch!

the images from the digisight are pretty amazing... that you can SEE hedgerows at 400+ is amazing .. and rabbits at 125 .. hogs are quite a bit larger than bunnies.

thanks for the advice
jeffe

400 yards is beyond the unit unless you have the laser IR, even then remember that the screen resoultion is 640x480.

It's good for the money but a proper job is better.

If you're not moderating then take your pick, the scope has a one shot zeroing system ( doesn't work quite like that but it's pretty good ) so you can swap it about as long you can get the base adapters.

It's got a fairly eyerelief so it's not too much of a problem with 308 i've tried it on and i've never been scoped.

If you want to hunt pigs at night you may find you need a separate NV monocular or several changes of batteries if you are going to be using the rifle for spotting.

A handlehld spotter is always best in terms of safety and movement.

You and your responsible, mature and sensible attitude! Big Grin

I'd sell you mine Jeffe, if there was a way to get it to you.

I'll ask around and see if there is a cheap gen1 device you might be able to look out second hand or something.

The boar shooters here tend to a NV monocular for spotting and then a lamp mounted on a adapter that clamps on to your scope.

Flick the red light on and shoot in two seconds or less. The trick apparently is turning the lamp off straight away so as to avoid making them lamp shy.

Are you allowed to lamp them?

ambient light.. backyard, no IR on --
could pick out well enough to KNOW what i am shooting - 70 yards.

90w on - 120 yards, no problem, none.. was sighting in on a 12x12 BLACK target .. in a towerstand, 130-140 would be easy

200w on .. 200 yards no problem.. could pick up a pipeline maker (its white) at over 300

amazing

Jeffe,

Mine made it in today. Mounted it and played looking at the 100 yard impact point in the day light. Gonna be a little problem as it is in the shade. Yard in front of it is so bright that it is hard to see the target at full sun. Was much better toward evening.

Evening here has a waning gibbous moon behind clouds. ATN illuminator is not in yet ... the internal illuminator is a bit weak at 100. Watched three deer from time to time over three hours at 50 to 75 yards. Easy.

I think this one will be fine for piggies and 'yotes to 150 or so with a decent illuminator. That's what I was hoping for.

Form 4 for the can to go on the 300 blk not yet back from the BATFE. Now very anxious to play with the complete rig!

Mike,
the ATN illuminator is superior to the 940 that pulsar was sending with the rig.

I find the onboard to be really good.. with BIG batteries... turn the sum ON.. turn contrast way up

in daylight, mostly close the shade, turn contrast way down
(the contrast ref is reversed, i know)

Jeffe,

Was able to do first sight-in this morning before the sun got too far overhead ... thus everything was in more shade than direct sun.

Some small gel cells came in today to build a rechargeable external 12V supply for use in the local area. Have an 8 AA cell holder ordered for a travel pack that the airlines will tolerate. Will still provide two additional battery loads for an evening.

Have coyotes pestering the livestock on a friend's place up the hill. The whisper will be just about perfect for dispatching them Wink

Onboard IR illuminator seems good to 75 yards or so. ATN is reported to be much better.

Jeffe,

I just ordered mine. It should be here tomorrow.

I am going to put it on a flat-top AR 5.56 for now, as we don't have piggies around here.

There is a chance I'll get a 7.62 upper of some sort (7.62x39, .300BLK, .30AR, .300 Whisper) for future pig hunts.

Digital reticle adjustment makes swapping the scope between uppers and rifles sound easy as pie.

Thanks, Jeffe. I've been flipping through the Digisight documentation online, and adjusting POAs between rifles seems to be relatively straightforward.

The Picatinny rail on top of the AR-15 receiver should mate nicely with the Digisight mount.

I'm leaning toward a .30 caliber AR for pigs, but Rob's rig may change my mind. I hope to check it out soon.

Have you used the reticle customization software?

Are you using an IR illuminator?
