A friend just had an Accuracy Internation barrel threaded by a "local gunsmith" and when looking through the bore the baffles seem slightly visable to one side. The barrel shoulder does not appear square to the bore, but we think the threads are.

All I know is that the bullet should not touch the baffles! There are special "washers" available that might take the play out and provide a "tight" fit. Can you fire one round and check to see if there are any marks in the suppressor? Seems a pity to have an expensive rig like that and then "cut corners" on a fairly precise piece of machining. Not slamming your friend!
Peter.

He wasn't cutting corners as much as he was trying to save time. I can't see firing a round as a test. Looking for a .2995" rod right now to check bore to suppressor alignment first.

I'm no gunsmith but have had many cut in the past. I have 6 moderated rifles at present and one thing I do know is if the gunsmith doesn't cut the thread exactly 90 deg to the bore, accuracy will be all over the place. Worst case is you blow out the baffles and murder your mod...
I always get mine re-crowned after cutting aswell since it's already sitting on the lathe

Updated: The owner of the Ai barrel sent the barrel and the suppressor to a licensed specialist who found the threads not to be concentric to the bore. ( a gap of .011" at the shoulder... So 1/2 inch or so of barrel was sacrificed and the situation has been physically resolved.

Great! Now did you perform the same "visibility" test to see what you can see? Has he shot it?

A good smith will spin the suppressor on the barrel while still in the lathe. This will immediately show up any run out due to poor threading, shoulder relieving, or even a manufacturing fault with the suppressor. Is the only way to get it right.

To answer your question, don't shoot the gun till you have checked it with a straight metal "Range Rod" that fits the bore correctly. If anything touches it's a problem.
Does the local gunsmith reallyknow how to cut threads on a barrel concentric with the bore? Unless he's a machinist, I'd be surprised. The vision test is a bit subjective, but usually is a good indicator of a problem. You'll know for sure with a rod check though.-Rob
