tiggertateSounds great, Jeff. I can see pork on the ground from here.
"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

jeffeossothanks for everyone who could make the hunt.
clear sky, 1/2 moon, zero need for illuminator, i could ID pigs past 300.. and see animals well past 400. as compared to genIII - not as good, but beats II+ handsdown
5 pigs in 2 hours, from 80-130 yards - some from rest, some offhand,,,
and in semi decent conditions, the groups get smaller

mstarlingCongrats Jeffe!
What is the twist on the R25?
Been fooling around w a .308 Win Savage bolt gun with a 1:10 Douglas bbl and an SAS Ti Arbiter can. Using RL-15, Winchester cases, and WLR primers. Doesn't like 150s at all. Just over 1 MOA with 165 Rem CoreLokts PPSPs. About 1 MOA with 168 SMKs and 168 Hornady Match. Have some 175 SMKs to test.

the catalog says 1:10 -- take the can off and see if that makes anything different?
14 March 2012, 08:00
mstarlingJeffe,
Have not seen any significant difference with or without the can ... even to impact point ... with two 6.8s, the .300 BLK, and the .308 Savage.
Same guy did the threading on 3 of the four and he is maniacal about machining accuracy.
Have been very, very pleased with the performance of the SAS Ti Arbiter can and their mounting system.

jeffeossoMike,
I would then remount the barrel, taking out some headspace if possible.. or setback and rechamber -- savages don't shoot that bad
14 March 2012, 09:44
mstarlingJeffe,
If anything, it is the bedding.
I reinstalled the barrel after it was returned from threading. Got it pretty tight. New winchester brass sits in the bottom of a Wilson gauge. Fired brass is flush with the top of the same gauge.
The groups given were with new brass ... so not matched to the chamber yet at all.
Am learning to bed the Savage. Last pass I took out the bedding around the tang ... which is supposed to cause erratic behavior with the Savage. Was a major improvement.
Accu-trigger is OK, but not wonderful like a good Mauser Timney.

mstarlingJeffe,
Got some more range time in today.
168 gr Hornady HPBT match projectiles driven with 42 gr FL-15 and WLR primers in new WW cases gave me 3/4" group.
175 gr SMKs driven by 41 gr RL-15 and WLR primers in new WW cases yielded less than 1/2" group.
All shooting done suppressed at 100 yards. Some days I shoot better than other days ... and today was not too bad.
Also got abt 1" with 225 Hornady HPBT Match in 300 BLK subsonic suppressed. Easily good enough to hunt! 225s are abt $10 cheaper than 220 SMJs per 100.

jeffeossoWhat did ya do different mike?
20 March 2012, 09:56
mstarlingJeffe,
I think about the only thing one can say from my experience so far it that the rifle likes 175s a bit better than 168s ... and I was shooting better today than last time.
I did notice that the harmonics of the barrel and can are different between the 168s and the 185s are different. With the 175s, the rifle has just a little ring to it when fired. Is weird.
Asked the maker about it. Can needs to go back to the manufacturer to have the non-serial number markings deepened as they are almost unreadable. He said he'd inspect the it.
Can didn't ring with other ammo after the 175s, so I think the load may just have hit an interesting vibration frequency.
The big difference in the bedding of a Savage action from what I've done in the past is that the Savage apparently doesn't like to have the tang bedded. Needs to be free floated.
