I finally made it to the range and shot my Pws sbr in 300 blackout with silcenerco omega suppressor. I left it was loud. So I filmed it my iPad and it does not appear as loud as I though it was. If it then semi auto ar action that is generating noise I am attributing to being loud? After sci I am going to shoot my ruger American and see how a bolt shoots. I like shooting suppressed. Makes one realize the impact noise of the bullet. Mike

I don't see any questions, but here are some things to consider. If I remember correctly, the microphone on your iPad cannot capture the report accurately because it will shut off after ~70dB to protect itself. A short barrel means your ear is closer to the muzzle than if it were 16". Supersonic ammunition is still loud after it passes through a suppressor. Try subsonic ammunition. A semi-auto may seem louder to you due to the cycling of the action and buffer spring noises. Your Ruger American will be quieter in that regard, but since it has at least a 16" barrel, the report will seem quieter too (since it is 6" farther away). The only way to really appreciate suppressors' effectiveness is stand near the muzzle while someone else uses them. George ![]()

I was shooting subsonic ammo in the 300 blackout and 9mm. I think it was the ar mechanism with the semi auto action and recoil buffer springs. Also I did not think about the sbr barrel length. I also did not wear any hearing protection. Overall I really like shooting suppressed. The reduction in noise and muzzle blast really gives a whole new picture to shooting. If i was 100 feet away I would not know a firearm was being fired. Mike

The shorter barrel also lets out more heat/noise than a longer barrel. An SBR is always going to be louder than a standard rifle with the same load and same silencer. ______________________________ In my opinion the best accessory to put on a rifle is a silencer.

Here in the UK suppressors are pretty much de rigueur for pest and game hunting and if one can get a licence for a hunting rifle in the first place easy to get. I have them on everything from .22LR to 30.06. I suspect the issue you are having is the action noise from the semi automatic. In a subsonic loading ( for example .22LR subsonic) all you should hear from your end (given a properly designed suppressor) is the click of the firing pin followed by the much louder thwack of the bullet hitting the target. I had a suppressor on a semi automatic .22LR ( we do a lot of high volume rabbit shooting at night here in the UK, often very close to farm buildings and habitation in general due to the compact nature of our country) and it was bloody loud with the bolt fyling back and forth. To get something approaching the performance you are looking for think about a bolt action. I find that getting expansion in subsonic loadings is a problem, particularly as even if you use a cast bullet you now how have a giant .22LR in terms of ricochet potential. Bullets like the 125 grain ballistic tip and 125 grain sierra prohunter won't expand in subsonic blackout loadings from my tests, the 240 grain Matchking loadings are frankly dangerous unless you have a very good good back stop.
