Live in the USA, but going to Zimbabwe in March--my PH tells me some of his hunters bring NV equipment to hunt the nocturnal varmints there---Does anyone know the exact do and don'ts with respect to traveling with NV/Thermals from the USA to say Zim?

One of the NV dealers told me that the US State Dept limits Gen 3 NV and 30HZ thermals from being taken outside the US--but wasn't sure about the rest.

Anyone have any experience in doing this?

Do not do it with out permits.
Taking NVG or Thermals out of the USA is ITAR restricted. You need permits from US State Department, Without ITAR permits it is a good way to get into big trouble. Contact State department and ask for ITAR/ export compliance department. Unless you want a 1-2 year membership in Club Fed get the permits or leave the NVG’s at home.

Ian

I'm actually going to Zim via overnight in JHB, then back to South Africa for a short
Hunt, then back to Zim to hunt, then home.

I'm thinking about taking a Pulsar N550 as I have read in a number of places
That these digitals scopes are exportable.

Hey Bowen
Which country do you want to use the sight in.
I think that in SA they sell the same sight under the name of Yukon N550.

I ended up going with the ATN Paladin 390 which works well out to about 200m.
Looking at getting a better illuminator to extend range but all good for now.

Any thermal gear coming with you?

What is the hunt plan?
Cheers
Ian

as mentioned earlier, the problem may be taking it out of the US rather than getting it into Africa.after all, if you take it out, you must bring it back, which means a 4457 permit. most scope retailers will not ship overseas because of State Dept. regs.

I don't want to be the guy who asks for an export permit to Zimbabwe.
