I use a suppressor with full velocity loads on a 30/06 for hunting deer, black bear and coyotes. My usual bullet weight is 165 grains. I’m going to have the barrel cut from 23 to 16.5 inches for handling convenience. With the velocity loss, probably 200+FPS, should I consider going to heavier Bullets to compensate for the velocity loss? I can do the math to determine the effects, but I wonder if anyone has actual experience doing this. Quick, Cheap, or Good: Pick Two

Using a heavier bullet is going to result in more velocity and power loss I think. Your best bet is to try bullet weights of 150-165-180 and see what groups best for you at the ranges you shoot at. Clock the speeds over a chronograph also. Excessive yaw should not be a problem if you use a full powder charge in a 16" barrel. It won’t make much difference, I’d say go lighter for more overall velocity if anything. It seems a shame to cut an. Ought six down that far, how about buying a cheap 308 for the job and keeping that rifle for full power jobs?
