Last week at a gun show, I picked up a cartridge with a 30 cal lead bullet. A paper label said '8.15 x 46R', but I knew both of those numbers were incorrect. The headstamp says 360/8 x 72, but it is 7.62 x 51.5; no neck (straight taper).

It is a tenth-inch shorter than a 32-40 Remington (and 3 hundreths smaller base diameter).

It looks like it would fit the 'gap' between the 6.5x48R Sauer and the 8x58 Sauer.--is there such a cartridge?

The headstamp indicated that the parent brass
was the 8x72/360 {8x72R Sauer}. 51.5mm case length
would be uncommon for a German cartridge.30 caliber is also rare in the German line of cartridges.

Switzerland would have been more likely to have produced a cartridge in 30 caliber with a case length of 51.5mm.

This cartridge may have been made for a Swiss
schuetzen rifle.

Several years back,I stumbled onto a web site
that listed quite a number of Swiss schuetzen
cartridges,but I don't recall what I was looking for when I found it.
