Tom, good idea but the 20 G. shells weigh too much to carry. You can kill anything with a 22 that you can with a 20G. I have a skeet thrower mounted on the hill beside my house + I shoot skeet with a 30-40 Krag scout model, so yes you can do it with a 22. Never mistake motion for action.

Ann, the beauty of a 12 G. pump is that racking sound usually means that you hopefully never have to use it. It's funny really, that is the one sound that is common in every language. Never mistake motion for action.

A ar15 in 5.56 - a giessele super duty 14.5 inch would be perfect. Also Carry some 22lr ammo - you may be able to trade it for something of value. Mike

LOL, for real but mine is a Rem 1100. Semi auto so no convincing 'sound' unless fired. It can launch a slug or two quite well. ~Ann

I recall Bill Jordan in his book "No Second Place Winner", making the comment, "In all my years of law enforcement, one thing I never figured out. What scares a man more, the chink-chunck of a pump-action or the click-click of a side by side." Never mistake motion for action.

Funny, True story here. A friend of mine was an engineer for Santa Fe railroad in Houston in the late 70s. One day this black co-worker wants his opinion n a home defense weapon. So Doug tells him, 12 G. pump. The next day Doug gets to work + the scuttlebutt reaches him that Bobby is really passed at you. So he searches Bobby out + asks whats wrong. Bobby lays on, "Man you done told me wrong. Last night 2 guys broke into my trailer + since I heard them I just crept down the hallway with my new pump gun + when I got to the living room, I worked the slide + brother that's when EVERYTHING happened. Those boys didn't go out the window or door, they took out my whole wall, getting out of there + I want to know who's gonna help me pay for my trailer wall that's now gone!" I have always found that a happy story, even better because it's true. Never mistake motion for action.

While 223/5.56 is one of my least favorite rounds, it checks all the boxes. So, a good lightweight, reliable AR in 5.56. Can kill anything, even at long range, where a 22LR/Mag would struggle, its lightweight, ammo is lightweight and readily available as well. It's hard to beat that combo.

I agree that the 223 is a great round, whether on an AR platform or an a Mini MKX bolt. Nice + light weight in both cases. But in the weight class; one can carry many more 22lR + most likely there would not be long range shooting for the 223s edge; especially if one adheres to the same policy that we use in hunting to the survival ethos; now matter how close you are, get closer. Just my opinion of course. Never mistake motion for action.

I guess its a tradeoff. 5.56 you have the option for long range shots for hunting and defense, 22lr, quieter, lighter, etc. I suppose there is a situation that each would be ideal. Luckily, for now, this is all just rhetorical.

Depends on what happened when things went south. Either a .22 or a rifle that will handle 7.62 x 39 might be the prevalent ammo available. Never rode a bull, but have shot some. NRA life member NRA LEO firearms instructor (retired) NRA Golden Eagles member
