A friend of mine hunted ibex about ten years ago in Mongolia (can't remember if they were Altai or Gobi) and I have been intrigued by the idea ever since. Could anyone who has hunted Mongolia for anything in the last few years post some details? I'm thinking about cost, difficulty of hunt, getting trophies home, number and quality of game, etc.

Wihntr, I was there in 2006. I have a report in the "Hunting Reports Rest of the World" forum. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hunted Altai Ibex around Aprl 05 I think. Had a great time ,well priced and must go back some day for game from the northern forests.

Just a note to add on Mongolia. They just implemented a quota system. I am going this August and my outfitter informed me that his clients this year will not be able to take 2 ibex, not enough tags.

So you couldn't take one in the Altai and another in the Gobi? Or you can't take two in the same range?

Not quite sure, thought about it but haven't checked as my plan was always only to take a single Altai. Here is what I received from Mongolia Travel "...new regulations of the Government of Mongolia the Ministry of Nature and Environment had decreased the hunting quotas for 2007 by 30 percent and all hunters coming to Mongolia in 2007 are not allowed to harvest additional ibex trophies." It goes on further to state that I could re-book to 2008 to add "additional ibexes", less hunters booked, more tags available per hunter. Not sure how the tags are allocated, whether it is species dependent.

I would be wary of anyone telling you that in 2008 you can hunt "additional ibex". You CAN hunt a Gobi AND Siberian (Altai) ibex, but due to the reduced quota you can't take a second of either as of now. This could change for 2008, but I would not count on it. The government controls what happens there and it is highly likely that by next year there will be some new ministers in place...it will change the entire scenario...welcome to Asia. I have a few guys booked this year for combination hunts (Gobi/Siberian) and have not had any problem securing permits thus far. We work exclusively with one of the top outfits in Mongolia so are kept up to speed on what is going on. FYI- Our 5 day hunt (based on a 9 day schedule from Ulaanbaatar) for either Gobi or Siberian (Altai) ibex is $4500 per person on a 2x1 basis. That price includes hotels in Ulaanbaatar, internal flights (to either Dalanzadgad or Khovd), guide, interpreter, etc. NOT included would be your flights to U.B. (about $1800 from the west coast), tips, and excess bag fees. I have been all over that region and we (Safari Outfitters) have been arranging hunts there longer than anyone. We know it well. Best, Clark Safari Outfitters, Inc.
