Kyrgyzstan Marco Polo trophy - Ship or declare as baggage?
For those of you who have done this trip... did you bring your horns and cape back or ship it back? Advantages and disadvantages to both and may or may not be possible based on the condition of the cape. If you shipped who did you use and how long did it take to get back? Customs easier one way or the other? If you shoot an ibex as well how much can you carry as declared baggage? Thanks in advance for your information!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

If you're looking at 2013 I can give you a lot better idea on all of this after November 6th this year.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Brett,
I am considering the hunt for 2013...

What ever you do bring the animals home with you on the plane! Don't even consider leaving them and shipping at a later date. When you get home get them to your taxidermist ASAP. I'm a taxidermist and I've seen how bad the condition of these hides are when they come back, some are even destroyed. Also don't let them drag your ram off of the mountain make them skin it where it goes down. The hair on a MP ram is very fragile and breaks easily.
Make sure all of your permits are in order and have a broker meet you at the airport if you feel more comfortable but bring your ram home!!!!
And most of all.........have a great time!!!!

Tell your agent that you absoutly want to bring
the capes and horns back with you. They work a scam and tell you the permit office is closed and then charge $1700 to ship your stuff to you.
A good agent will have the permits in order just make them commit to your trophies home.

I just brought my stuff back with me
on the plane. I did it 6 months ago.
It wasn't rocket science. Just have the paperwork & you are good.

I've done this now in Kyrgyzstan, Canada (twice), and New Zealand.

the shipment to USA will cost more expensive.
If we send a trophy from Kirgizstan into the USA we take for sending 400 dollars for one trophy. At us the lowest tariffs.
Its possible to receive a trophy in 2-3 months after successful hunting.

I did the hunt in 2007 and we had our trophies shipped home. There were no problems and if I recall we had our trophies in about 3 months.

there are other scams involved with shipping as well. Some outfitters wait until the end of the season to pick up tags in order to bargain down the bribes they pay for them. People who hunt before then may not actually have tags. Clients are told that all trophies are shipped after the season is over to create this opportunity. But sometimes there are no tags left and then the hunter is told that there are "problems" and the trophies will then only be shipped in the next season.

Take your capes and horns with you and be specific about this upfront.

We advise to all hunters to take away the trophy as luggage.

I think that it is possible to find a lot of helpful information

from the hunter who was last year in Kyrgizstan and have brought a trophy with himself without using expensive agent.

Don't let them out of your sight! Bringing them home as luggage is super easy and it will save you a lot of money and anticipation. Take an extra duffle bag along and you are good to go. If I remember correctly, it was $125 for the extra bag.

How is it getting the licenses to be able to take it on the plane with you? It doesn't seem that bad as most guys are doing it. I imagine it is cheaper this way as well.

Your outfitter should take care of all that for you. It takes a day or two. You need a copy of your hunting licence, CITES and a vet certificate and be sure they get signed at the airport by the customs official.
