There was a two part show that is definitely worth seeing if you get a change. It is absolutely fascinating.

The travel itself was quite interesting. They drive through Abbottabad and a couple of other cities. One can't help but notice the armed security in the vehicle in front of him. The drive over the Karakorum highway is both magnificent and terrifying . The scenery is incredible. One wrong move on that road and you are dead. The side of the road is a sheer drop off. Then there is the issue of the falling rocks.

They get to some village from which the hunt starts. The hunt is conducted by locals. These guys are tough, really tough. Some of these guys are climbing in sandals or running shoes. Their ability to navigate these rocks is something I would never have. They hop over these rocks like it is some kids game.

They make a long trek up the mountain. There is a trail carved out of the side of the mountain. I can't even imagine how they did this or how long it took. One side is straight down. It looked pretty damn scary.

They have some horrible weather and have to spend a lot of time just hanging out. They are all clearly getting along in spite of the language barriers. When he finally gets his chance, I have to say that I am not sure that I could have done what he did. The last few hundred feet of the climb would have been terrifying. It was definitely life threatening. Jim even said he was not sure he would have done it a second time.

The way down proved even worse. Rocks were falling. The water had risen. In one place they show a house sized rock bouncing down a mountain! They barely got out before the Karakorum highway was closed.

They also go to great lengths about the conservation aspect of the hunt. This is one of the great conservation success stories.

If you like this type of hunt, you might want to check this out.

Hello Larry

That was an excellent program and good filming. I know that area well , it is one of the most difficult areas to hunt Markhor in Pakistan.

In the Chitral area the hunting is a lot easier than the area Shockey hunted.

Aziz

It was as usual an excellent show. There are very few worth watching but his shows are at the top of the list.

I have made up my mind to make a trip to Pakistan. I have a couple of other trips to get out of the way first. Notably Tajikistan for Marco Polo next year.

I ma getting a bit old for the mountain hunts but I am stubborn. Shows like this really fuel the fires.

Larry if you plan to hunt in 2019, I will go with you and hunt Blue Sheep in Shimshal on Yaks, a true mountain adventure.

Just finished part two. He gave the best and most observant defense of "trophy pics".

It is a memory of the conquest and adventure we can share and keep. That in the eons we would paint it on the wall of a cave. This both explained the picture taking and reinforced the hard fact man was first and always will be a predatory species.

It reminded me of the alter of skulls that I read ancient man would build.

I felt that prior episodes in this series to my eye was exploitive of the local populations. Therefore, I quit watching. Thank you for the recommendation that caused me to give it a second chance. Very powerful episode. It struck all the right notes.

Just saw the show. Wow! Scared me just watching. The ascent up a snow/ice covered chute to get a peek at a markor. Wow.
The local guys in sneakers and deck shoes. They are tougher than me.

Wow is all I can say.

Best comment on the show was from Shockey' "Going up is optional, getting down is mandatory."

Wow!

I watched it over the weekend. Just plain awesome!!!

During my mid 20s I took up rock climbing as my main passion. Climbed hard for about 10 years. Im not surprised by the locals at all. They grow up walking around on the rocks. Its not that difficult when you learn how.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

I watched it and I am hoping NOT to do it in Kyrgyzstan. We climbed rock cliffs before all the gadgetry. A friend fell 75 feet and it was closed!!! That's when I stopped.

Excellent show, my two kids (4yo girl, 2yo boy) were riveted watching next to me. It was a bit hard to tell my daughter it'll take daddy a bit of time before I can take her to hunt her own markhor! With planning, work, and a bit of luck maybe one day

I saw it too. I like how he shows the locals and obviously has respect for who they are and their customs.

It's his son who is the actual producer of the series. When he took over the job the quality of production of all his shows went way up. Talented young man.

Love watching those out of the way hunts that one seldom gets to see. I would never be able to climb those mountains if you gave me all the markhor in Pakistan. Too scared of heights!!!!!!!

Not to bring up old politics but what a hunting destination India once was. From mountain game to lion, rhino, elephant, tigers, bears, two species of wild bovine, beautiful palaces, huge lakes, rivers, deserts, forests, plains and the land of double rifles if such a place ever existed!

They did not spend much time filming the descent(with good reason), but that had to be scary scary. I remember a quote from Duncan Gilchrist, "I never climb with an ice axe, it will get you in places you cannot get out of".

Uncharted is my favorite of the hunting shows. So much better than the others with there relentless product plugs that were auctioned off to the highest bidder. We need more shows like this.
This episode was exceptional- the only thing it lacked was a definitive account of where the funds and fees were allocated and how many markhor are conserved in the region because of the influx of money.

Yeah if there was ever one of those guys you would want to hunt with it it would have to be Jim Shockey.

Oh - and Eva too. Wink

Len, they did say in the program and I know it for sure that 80% goes to the Villages and their NGO where the hunt is conducted , 20% goes to the Pakistan game and wildlife department.

The area that Shockey hunted receives 1 permit yearly.

Aziz
