A US trophy hunter is facing global criticism on social media after he shot a rare snow leopard and published this grinning picture online.

In the image, Hossein Golabchi - also known by the nickname Soudy - stands smiling from ear-to-ear with the stunning white and black animal draped across his shoulders.


The leopard appears to have been shot at least twice in the rear as blood seeps down its coat.

Golabchi, originally from Iran, came under fire after the so-called trophy hunting snap circulated online.



More than 100,000 people have signed a petition calling for Golabchi to be brought to justice.

The appeal was originally launched by account user Amanda on Care2, an online community that champions animal rights, on October 23 - International Snow Leopard Day.

Non-profit organisation Defenders of Wildlife has reported there are only an estimated 3,500 to 7,000 snow leopards left in the wild, with 600 to 700 in zoos.

The petition reads: "There's nowhere in the entire Western Hemisphere (and the rest of the world) that allows ANYONE to go into Central Asia to 'trophy hunt' a snow leopard.


"It is illegal to own their body parts or their beautiful fur and importing their remains into the United States is a federal offense.

"This long-time and prolific trophy hunter of rare cats must be made an example of or these magnificent cats will vanish forever."

Thats BS. Look at Soudys face/age. In his book he says he shot it in 1984!! in Mongolia. Where is the problem?

Picture looks completely fake and photo shopped to me....

No it`s not photoshopped. It`s from his own book. But it was 33 years old. Legal tag. So this is just stupid.

Thanks for clarifying....the photo looked strange to me.especially how his head and face appeared in contrast. Probably because it was such an old photo....

In a more recent update, TERA wrote: "We've been contacted with concerns that the hunt may have happened too long ago to be prosecutable. To our knowledge there is no statue of limitations on international wildlife crime nor do we believe that there was just one snow leopard brutally destroyed." They also said that Golabchi had described the snow leopard hunt in a book.

From Amazon, that book appears to be from 2008. According to the Mail Online, Golabchi owns a construction company in the US state of Georgia and is originally from Iran. He is also reported to have been the recipient of awards for his hunting.

The Snow Leopard Trust told IBTimes UK that they had been monitoring the case for some time and we still trying to gather the facts. According to them, Golabchi says the hunt occured in Mongolia during the 1980s, "which would make it at least possible that it was legal," a spokesperson said.

Golabchi also says that he exported the pelt to Mexico, which was not a part of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species at the time, but that the exort occured through Germany, which was.
