Markhor always have been expensive because of their rarity. Also, the majority of the money goes back to the villages and helps give the animals value so the locals are vigilant against poachers and insure increasing populations. A worthy cause and kudos to those involved and who paid so much for a single animal. I will likely never be able to hunt markhor but applaud those who can. And I always enjoy reading their stories and seeing videos of these shikars! On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. Why did you even bother? Pontificating on the costs of modern markhor hunting going to the rich man is urinating up woven hemp. Go be a troll elsewhere. What exactly do you think the price of an animal for which there are only 4 hunting permits in the entire world should sell for?????? How many markhor permits are you the "common man" owed???? I'm not singling out Frank as he's just one of many but here is an example of one of the things that is killing our sport. A lot of hunters think whatever hunting lies beyond their financial means is irrelevant and doesn't need their concern. Heck! I used to feel that way but that is so wrong. If expensive trophy hunting flourishes so will hunting for that annual whitetail but if the trophy hunts start to disappear so eventually will all hunting. The antis are unrelenting and will not be satisfied until we've all hung up our guns for good. To say one does not care about hunting the Markhor is to say they don't care about hunting. Mark MARK H. The average hunter is not going to know what a markhor is much less. want to hunt one. Off the subject slightly. During my recent hunt in Tajikistan, a guy hunting in another camp had the opportunity to take cell phone video of a Markhor while he was hunting ibex. It was very close, something like 20 yards. Amazing experience and video.

I purchased three of the Markhor permits in these auctions for my clients, I understand that the price of the Markhor is very expensive but it must be remembered that 22 years ago a survey was conducted with the joint effort of WWF, IUCN and Pakistan Game department and they only counted 350 Markhors, The Government of Pakistan decided to auction 4 permits to hunt the Astore Markhor and 4 for the Kashmir Markhor, 80% of the tag price would be given right away to the community where the hunt would take place. the locals started saving the Markhors from that day on with their lives and 4 years ago another survey was conducted in which more then 3,200 Markhors were counted. this monarch of the mountain is still considered endangered because if they are over hunted then they simply go into afghanistan where they are culled down in war torn areas as a food source. so the hunting in pakistan needs to be very controlled until there is sufficient population. here are some Markhors I guided recently.

Well done Danish.....it's efforts like yours (as counter-intuitive as they may seem to the blind) that is saving many of the world's threatened species. Ironic that the true nut job antis would admittedly rather see a species become extinct than conserved through managed hunting.
