I always assumed this went on, but had never seen a photo.

when i was a kid(about 1977) i had a friend who's father was in vietnam. they had a mounted tiger(small, maybe half grown) in their house that he killed over there. at least that was the story.

Started digging and found another pic.

...and a bit earlier in history. Lifted from this site. http://www.cnac.org/ball01.htm Captain Ball was apparently killed Jan 7 1945, just a few weeks after this photo was taken.

Great pictures of Indo chinese tigers. Large males are about 300 to 350 lbs max and about 8.5 feet nose to tail.

It would still go on today (and in some cases does) for snow leopard, ibex, markhor and argalis in Afghanistan.

We had a snow leopard that used to hunt hares near the runway in Afghan.

I have seen markhor and argalis in Afghanistan while flying missions.

If it would have been the 1960's I am sure he would have gotten a few rounds of 5.56, in todays military it would be the end of your career.

And on national news.

I have seen photos in Iraq of wildboars, and urials and ibex taken by servicemen.

I know when they were setting up the base in Djibouti that quite a few bat eared foxes and gazelles got shot.

Today in 2012, most of the people that are doing it are in places pretty remote.

These photos remind me of a few years ago at the SCI Convention. There was this incredible painting of an old forgotten crashed helicopter in the Vietnam jungle. A tiger was staring at the wreckage, you had to look closely but the crew was painted "transparently like ghosts" and they were all around the jungle.

Does anyone know the title of this painting or artist? Thanks.

One of the tigers pictured above (I have forgotten which) was found with human remains in its stomach. The description clarified that no US soldiers in the area had gone missing.

Wow, someone needs to put together a library of these photos. Were there Kouprey, pythons and Guar also taken?

I never saw a live tiger during my tour in RVN (68/69) with the 1st Cavalry, but did encounter some trees that were clawed by them in the Xuan loc area and also in the Perrots beak area as well as just over the border from bu Dop in Cambodia. Makes you stay alert on night ambush.
