A friend of mine took this sheep a few days ago. Good luck to everyone heading over there this year, looks like a great season in the making.

Is your friend from the USA? If he is how did he get an import permit? I'm scheduled to leave on Nov 18th and from what I've heard no has been given an import permit from the USFW Service. My name is on the Tajik list but we have no info from our Gov.

Jim Kelly- I'm in the same boat. I do know that none of the the clients of the major booking agents have received import permits. The reasons are sketchy but apparently Tajik has not provided sufficient info to satisfy USFW. I'm concerned that this situation may not be resolved in time to do us any good.

Jim,

Yes he is from the U.S.A. The photo is of Corey Knowlton #30 on the list, he does "The Professionals" with Jim Shockey.

Why can't you have your trophy shipped at a later date if you do not receive your import permit by the time you leave?

Isn't that a GREAT sheep!!!!

When we went in 2008, my husband's Marco Polo sheep and my ibex were shipped at a later date. We did not get to bring our trophies home with us.

With so much $ invested in this kind of trip I really would like to have the import permit in my hand. I also know that many of the rams that are shipped at a later date seem to have BAD problems with hair slipping or the capes are just no good at all. No, I'm not going to the Hot Springs camp I've heard too many horror stories. My hunt is booked with Yuri M. I hunted Dagestan Tur a few years ago and we were able to bring our rams home with us, the outfitter had all of the export permits ready to go. Hoping for the same with the Marco Polo but that seems to be alot to ask for. Do you think there's a chance no import permits will be issued?????

Jim!
Marco Polo is in a CITES-Convention.
Dagestan Tur - no...
Tadgjikistan is now not a CITES-Convebtion Member.
Thats a problem. The CITES you can have only throw Russia, but you must shot a ram for permit...
I think, there are no chance to bting the ram home with.

igor

Yuri seems to have captured a large percentage of the market. A couple of my friends have hunted with him and all have some spectacular rams to show for it. He is quite frequently praised at the SCI chapter meetings I've attended as well.

Good luck on your hunts! Hopefully the import issue will be resolved.

For those planning to hunt Marco Polo in Tajikistan this year, don't expect to be able to bring your trophies back with you.
First of all, NO import permits have been issued as of now. USFWS is waiting for more information from them and will not issue permits until all required and requested info has been received.
Second and just as important, Tajikistan is not an official CITES member. They applied for CITES status, but have not been granted that status...meaning hunters will not be able to get CITES export permits. In the past, Moscow CITES office was used to obtain these permits, but that is no longer allowed. Even if you have an IMPORT permit, you can't get your trophies into the U.S. without and EXPORT permit from the country of origin.

We here at Safari Outfitters were concerned about all of these unanswered questions and when nothing was solid by early Sept. we opted to roll all of our clients to 2011. Things will be much more stable by then and the Tajiks will have had more time to gain CITES status. For those going this year...good luck. Be sure they take good care of your capes and horns.

Cheers,

Horror stories-

For several years BOTH of the main outfitters (Yuri and the Bekmurodi's)played the game of "pay for size"...those are the horror stories you likely have heard.

"if you pay $5000 (or more) I will take you to where the bigger rams are"...

This was a common occurance in BOTH camps up until about 2007. Since then both have adopted the policy of allowing you to take a ram of any size for the normal price of the hunt.

Do hunters still offer money for bigger rams? Of course they do...you are talking about some of the wealthiest hunters in the world and it will always go on as long as there are hunters with money and egos.

If you want the honest truth about these or any other hunts, feel free to contact me.

Update from USFWS - Mike Carpenter announced today that USFWS will begin issueing permits to the 40 hunters who's names were submitted on the official Tajikistan hunting list (and who's applications had been submitted to USFWS).

Still not clear on how the CITES export permits will be handled.

I will post any updates I get.

Good hunting,

US Import Permits To Be Issued for Marco Polo Hunters

(posted November 16, 2010)

At long last, US hunters scheduled to hunt Tajikistan for a Marco Polo sheep this season will receive an import permit from US Fish & Wildlife Service this week. The Hunting Report received the word this morning directly from Mike Carpenter, the Service biologist responsible for issuing the permits.

"We will issue permits only to the 40 individuals who are on the list received from Tajikistan," Carpenter wrote us in an e-mail response to our inquiries about the status of import permits. "If hunters are on that list and have an application with us, they will receive a permit. They may hunt at any time between the September 15 season opening and March 31, 2011. As long as they have our original import permit they can import their trophy."

Hunting Report subscribers who are on the list are encouraged to send us photos of their trophies and a hunt report as soon as they return from their Marco Polo hunt. Good luck and shoot straight! - Barbara Crown, Editor.

I guess that's it I'm out! I was told that there would be 60 permits issued and there were only 56 apps so everyone would get a permit. NOT! Of my party of four only one was put on the list and he's leaving next Wedensday. Now the booking agent will not even call back or reply to any of our emails. Lesson learned! I'm starting to loose faith in the whole hunting industry! BTW we were told that our names were added to the original list but this was not true.

Jim,

I am very sorry to hear this development regarding your hunt. I know how much preparation and anticipation goes into a Marco Polo sheep hunt.

Jim,

Sorry to hear about that. Years ago, I was in the same boat. My agent, Bryan Martin, returned me deposit - though I am not sure he ever received a refund.

Did your deposit get returned? Would you mind sharing the name of your agent?

Thanks

We booked thru Ameri-Cana in Edmonton, Alberta and we've always heard that they have 100% in getting all of the correct permits. My one friend who did get his name on the list is over there right now. The agent informed him that he could not bring his gun because of a paperwork problem. Myself and my two friends are in the process of trying to get back our deposits. We spoke to Mike Carpenter at USFW and he stated that there will only be 40 permits issued to US hunters so we have no chance for this year. If we all get our money back I'll have no bad feelings but we just want what's right...a simple refund. If I would have known how much bs you have to go thru and all of the waiting I would just skip it and go somewhere else.

Jim, have you heard back from them? Their reputation is generally a good outfit. The non-response is a surprise.

thanks

I guess they were busy with their mulie and white tail hunts but we finally did hear back. They want us to wait a few days to see what happens but I feel it's pointless since Carpenter is not going to issue any more permits. Plus I don't want to go by myself I want to go with friends. I just want my money back so i can think about booking a stone sheep hunt or something else.
