Court summons wildlife officials over illegal hunting in Thar

An additional sessions judge on Tuesday summoned officials of the wildlife department of Tharparkar district to submit a detailed report on their alleged failure to protect endangered and rare species, including deer.

The officials have been told to submit a report on April 21. One Aftab Samejo, local activist from the desert district, had moved the court through his lawyer Zahiruddin Nohrio seeking action against hunters and those responsible for the protection of endangered species.


The petition claimed that hunters and poachers had been given a freehand to kill rare species even in wildlife sanctuaries of the district. “Endangered species, including deer, are facing extinction in Tharparkar due to excessive hunting and poaching by influential figures,” the petition added and held officials responsible for the “genocide” of animals and birds in different areas of the district.

A few days ago, unidentified hunters had killed as many as eight deer in the Dahli area. Some locals informed the wildlife officials about the incident but they did not initiate an inquiry in the light of pictures they had shared with them.
