Did you use the gun on the picture?

Yes Klasnikov SVD. Well worn. Terribly inconsistant/inaccurate, unfortunately. Main problem was Russian ammo of many different shapes and sizes....

Why did you have to use that gun? Was there no way for you to bring your own from NZ?

My congrat's I wasn't as lucky as yourself.sent three days in a tent due to rain and snow then just made it out to safety through a very flooded river.well done fatastic trophy

8 years old. Unfortunately I missed two larger Tur that were 10-12 years old, out at 200 yards. This gun was really only good out to 80 yards, after that anything could happen. Also the ammo was a mixed bag, som ewent bang some went pop. So this all added to the challenge. With the Tur I shot, it got a full magazine at 80 yards, and fortunately fell over, the gun empty.

A classic Ex-Sovirt Mountain adventure. Tur by Klasnikov. Some of the hunting advantage put back in the court of the Tur.

I already have the trophy back in NZ. I brought it back in my baggage, declared it to customs. They took it away for fumigation. But no problems as it is not a Cites listed animal. I do beleive that soon these will become cites listed, as they are getting a lot of hunting pressure from both Trophy Hunters, and locals hunting for meat.

Wow, what a great trophy. Using the Klasnikov sounds like it really added something to the adventure.

But it seems to me that you are not absolutely right.In Dagestan. On other side to border, there are very few hunters. The political situation is bad. But there animals very happy

Mate who did you do the hunt through? I am intrested in going back after the first stuff up I had to finish what I started. I wasn't really happy with the guys I went with. If you could let us know that would be great

Beautiful ram - which outfitter did you hunt with?

No Outfitter/middleman. Just hunting direct with the natives, through a local contact.

The last part to the adventure..picking up the completed trophy from the Taxidermist...hanging it on the wall...and reliving every detail of the experience....

Very nice. That's a adventure worth remembering it.

Fantastic mount. Great to do it without an outfitter either! Put some adventure back into things.

Outstanding animal!

I will say in Russia when I was hunting Tur we saw A LOT of animals, so hopefully they will stay of the CITES list for a bit.

Small correction: The SVD is not a Kalashnikov nor was it designed by him. E. Dragunov was the lead designer hence the D in SVD. You must of had a real turd of a rifle and I suspect the ammo was the biggest at fault as most SVD/TIGR rifles are fairly accurate out to at least 600m.

And a sight, that had a lot of play in it.....
They insisted to remove the sight when not shooting.......mmmmmm!!!!!!

I bet that was your issue! I was thinking about that after I posted when I relooked at your photo. That scope looks like it has been through the ringer, and then I thought if the scope wasn't attached properly and tight you would be screwed there too.
